1973 All Star Break
Mike Caldwell has arrived ladies and gentlement. The man is on fire and just keeps getting better for us each and every year. At this rate Randy Jones may just become his trusty sidekick when all is said and done.
Once again we find ourselves in the driver's seat come all star time. We currently lead the division, but by only two games.
The team pitching has been amazing. We currently have a team ERA of 3.88 which is much better than we had expected to have this year. The starting rotation is still lacking a solid number 5 that we can count on day in and day out, and we could use one more arm in the pen to really solidify our chances. We hope to pick one up before the trade deadline and if not we will more than likely sign one in free agency when the time comes around.
Batting average is down a little and there have been some minor changes to the lineup. SS Rico Petrocelli has yet to find his stroke this year, and Dave Hilton has taken over duties at 1B after replacing Nate Colbert due to an injury. Dave has been playing so well that he has yet to give up his starting role.

Many thought this was the year of the Padres. Johnny Grubb and Dwight Evans were coming off very impressive rookie seasons and the pitching staff looked to be one of the strongest in the league. There were a few short comings on offense, but we were hoping that we could overcome them with the strong pitching.
In the end the Padres came up just a little bit short of the post season. Mike Caldwell posted one of the most impressive seasons for a pitcher that the Padres will likely see for a while. Randy Jones finally showed what all the hype was about and is becoming a very solid number two guy in the rotation. Mike Corkins was one of the league's best closers and for the most part the rest of the pen was very solid.
A few players that had been putting up big numbers decided to take the 1973 season off though, it seemed. Rico Petrocelli had an off season compared to what he had been doing. This was disappointing considering this was the best Padres lineup that we had ever seen coming in to the season.
Nate Colbert finds himself on the bench behind Dave Hilton. Hilton has proven that he can hit for average and gets on base a lot more often then the slugging Colbert. 24 year old Jerry Morales lead the team in homers and Rico, despite batting in the .230's lead the team in RBI with 98.
The 1973 season has come and gone, but we made progress again and will be back in 1974. Just wait til next year!!

Contract Negotiations
CF Jerry Morales
Not even a question. He has been one of our best hitters since we called him up. There was no way that we were going to let him test the FA waters.
3B Van kelly
Van had a rough start with the Padres, but that wasn't his fault. He was forced to start at thrid for us and he wasn't ready. Time has worked in his favor and he has been able to learn some valuable things on the bench behind Bob Bailey. He is a great pinch hitter.
RP Mike Corkins
Mike continues to be one of the best closers in the league. The price was right to locke him up for 4 more years.
P Dick Kelley
He was getting old and not putting up the numbers that we needed. He has been tooling around in the minors for the last few years as well.
P Tom Dukes
Tom had been a big part of the pen, but he was getting up in age and his skills were diminished to say the least.
P Steve Arlin
Steve had great potential but he just wasn't reaching it in San Diego. We wish him the best of luck wherever he ends up. He will certainly find a spot with another team.
CF Cito Gaston
Gaston has been a big contributor to the team. He offers a great solution to injury of any of our OF'ers. Cito gets a lot of playing time as a pinch hitter as well.
C Sonny Ruberto
Sonny played hard but he just didn't have the skills that we needed to keep him around for the money that he was asking for.
P Ken Tatum
Ken was the best relief pitcher that was available in free agency. We could have used some offense but we are still moving along with the thought that pitching wins championship.

1974 Preveiw
The 1974 season should be one to remember. The Padres are coming off the best season in franchise history where they won an astounding 93 games but somehow still managed to finish in second in the division behind the Giants. A lot of things happened in 1973 that lead many to believe the Padres may very well stand a chance to win the division in the coming year.
The lineup has changes slightly as Horace Clarke will find himself batting in the 8th spot. His OBP just wasn’t high enough to warrant him staying in the leadoff spot. That job goes to 1B Dave Hilton. Dave isn’t your prototypical 1B. He doesn’t hit for power but he finds a way to get on base and has decent speed which is everything you can ask for when hitting number one in the lineup.
The rest of the lineup is very strong. Rico Petrocelli is hoping to bounce back from an off year. Dwight Evans and Johnny Grubb continue to get better and Jerry Morales is turning in to one of the better outfielders in the game today. Bob Bailey is always solid at third and will put up good numbers in the five hole for sure.
Catcher is the lone weak offensive spot in the lineup as Ron Slocum is known more for his defense than his bat. This position has been one that the Padres have been looking to upgrade for some time. Pitching however, has proven to be more of a need and therefore has garnered most of the attention to this point. That may change during the season by way of trade.
The pitching staff should once again be strong this year. Mike Caldwell is the obvious number one and Randy Jones is become a very close number two man in the rotation. If they can put up another year like 1973 the Padres are going to be a very hard team to sweep in a series.
The pen is still solid with veterans Mike Corkins, Ken Tatum, and Jerry Bell leading the way. Rookie Jimmy Freeman will find himself in the long reliever spot to start the year but could very well end up in the rotation at some point of someone struggles or gets hurt.
Another rookie will find himself in the starting rotation to begin the year. Randy Sterling will get the nod as the number 4 starter and should do pretty well in his firs season in the bigs. He put up impressive numbers in AAA last year and played very well in the spring.
The minors are a strong point for the Padres. We have several good looking prospects coming through the system. To name a few;

There have been a few disappointments in the farm system as well though. Joaquin Andujar doesn’t appear to be the great prospect that we had once hoped. He still finds himself in AA when Jimmy Freeman and Randy Sterling are already at the major league level. He still may develop in to a quality pitcher, but he is taking a bit longer than the Padres would like to see.

No way that can be right. They haven't been giving San Diego any credit for a long time. For the last three seasons we have been predicted to finish under .500. Last year we won 93 games and the year before that we won 85.

1974 Amateur Draft
We really liked Sprowl's potential and we have had very good luck drafting guys that come up with only two pitches. It seems like they can concentrate on those two and can mold them in to some dominant pitches.
Herr is depenadable and durable. He has a great eye. When you get the chance to take a very talented second baseman in the ammy draft you have to jump all over it.
Cooper was the best position player left in the third round and we didn't want to miss out on him.
Hobbs has great potential. He is quite a few years from being ready, but that shouldn't be too much of a concern.
Cliburn was a risk. We really need to upgrade at catcher and there wasn't much in the draft. We are hoping that we can get lucky with him and he will develop in to a major league talent some day.
Dave Ford, well we got lucky with this pick. We found a player in the 6th round that still has decent potential and a shot to make it to the majors someday.
1974 All Star Break
Well...what can I say? The season isn't exactly going as I had hoped that it would. The hitting has just been well, not good. The pitching has been amazing but we can't hit enough to really get anything going. We are playing well. I guess that a few years of success has made me want a division title pretty badly. It's almost as if I'm expecting it a little bit.
Dave Hilton started off the year slowly and found himself down in the number 8 hole pretty quickly. He continued to struggle and Nate Colbert has taken over the first base duties. Nate doesn't hit for much average, at all, but he does hit the ball over the fence quite often which is more than what Dave was doing for us.
As you can see, we have a team ERA of 3.24 which is just crazy to be honest. I haven't had a pitching staff that good in quite some time. Randy Jones and Mike Caldwell continue to pitch well as we head in to the second half of the season. Dave Roberts is contributing alot as well. Randy Sterling is having some rookie growing pains, but overall he has pitched very well, especially in the early part of the year.
Right now we find ourselves 6.5 games out of first place. That isn't an impossible amount to overcome, but I sure would like to be closer. There is still a lot of baseball to go and we should be able to climb back in to this thing. If not, there is always NEXT YEAR!!

1974 Review
It was another disappointing season in 1974. Heh...who would have thought that the Padres would be upset about winning 96 games just 5 seasons ago? Winning has become something of a tradition already. We have enjoyed three winning seasons in a row at this pont and things look very good for the future.
We have a few holes in the lineup that need to be fixed, but we are pretty happy with where the pitching staff sits at this point. Catcher, or First Base will likely be the one thing that we sign this offseason in free agency.
The team played tremendous. We were everything that we had hoped to be. In the end however the Giants just proved to be a little bit better. In just 5 years this team has become a consistent contender. We put fans in the seats and we win games. What more could someone ask for? A World Series!! San Diego fans and ownership are starting to get a little anxious.

Contract Negotiations
SS Rafael Robles
We thought that this guy might turn in to something valuable but apparently we were wrong. He has been tooling around in AAA for the last couple of seasons and we thought that it was finally time to just let him go.
SP Dave Roberts
Dave has been excellent for us. There was no way that we were going to break up the starting rotation at this point. They played too well last year and Roberts was a big part of that success. Having him on the roster takes a bit of pressure off the big two (Jones, Caldwell).
SS Jerry Davanon
Jerry just wanted too much money. He turned in to quite the SS but we just had too many coming up through the system and with Rico playing every day it wasn't looking good for Jerry to be playing all that much. He was too good to be a bench player and I think we all knew it.
C Ron Slocum
This position has not been one that has been good to us. Every player we have played there has been pretty inept when it comes to offense. Ron was no different. When he asked for over 200K per year, we just couldn't do that. We liked Ron, and we wish him the best of luck.
SS Rico Petrocelli
Rico has been a staple in the middle of the lineup for the Padres and we would like to keep it that way. When his contract is up it will probably either be time for him to retire, or we would be parting ways with him.
LF Johnny Grubb
Johnny has turned in to a star and we took the opportunity to sign him long term. 200K per year is a deal for this guy and we knew it. His health is a little bit of a concern, but at this price I think it is going to be well worth it.
RF Dwight Evans
Evans may have a little bit more potential, and he is certainly going to turn in to more of a power hitter than Grubb. Locking him up for 7 years was a little more costly than Grubb, but at the end it will look like a good deal.
No free agent signings this year. We were looking for a catcher, but the best one out there was Bill Freehan. Not that Bill is a bad player, but we couldn't justify paying over 300K for a guy who hits .250 a year and spends a lot of time recovering from nagging knee injuries.
