Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1971 All Star Break
Power has not been a problem in San Diego this year. At the all star break we find ourselves with 5 players in double digits in homeruns. Some of them suprising, some of them not. SS Rico Petrocelli has an amazing 28 homeruns through 81 games. We expected some power from him, but this is beyond any of our wildest dreams.
3B Bob Bailey has played extremely well for us as well and the trade that was pulled off to obtain him has gained GM Barr a lot of favor with the fans of San Diego. With his OBP up to .376, he could find himself in the lead off spot before the return from the all star break. GM James Barr had this to say about the trade involving Bailey.
"It is very important that we show the people of San Diego that we are continually trying to improve the team. When you are offered a trade like the one that Montral brought to the table you have to take it. We were able to upgrade our offense without giving up anything that really factored in to our future plans. The kids we traded were great kids, and we hope that have a lot of success in their careers, but lets be honest, they just weren't going to be much of a factor if they stayed here."
The starting pitching for San Diego has been pretty good as of late. Randy Jones has even found himself back in the major leagues and part of the starting 5. He still hasn't played up to his potential, yet, but there are signs of things getting better with Jones and his mental make up.
"I've just been working real hard. When I got sent down to AAA a light went off in my head. I figured out that I just needed to work hard and shut my mouth. Once I did that, things started coming together. I can't place blame on my teammates anymore. I have to take it all on my shoulders. When I pitch bad it isn't anyone's fault but my own."
Despite a rough stretch right before the break the Padres still find themselves at .500 going in to the mid point of the season. Mike Caldwell is building on his great rookie season by having a Cy Young quality season thus far. He hasn't been ringing up the wins, but he has certainly been giving the Padres every chance to win when he goes out to the mound.

Pretty good trade here for the Padres. We ship off a young promising pitcher for a young pitcher who is already putting up good numbers. This should help us strengthen the bullpen which is having some issues so far this season.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1971 Review
The season has come and gone. The positive outlook at the all star break was once again setting us up for failure. We arrived at the half way point with a .500 record for the second year in a row, but were unable to make a run when it counted the most. Overall the season was a success as we saw several youngsters and new guys contribute greatly to the team in many ways.
Cito Gaston found himself in the OF taking over for the often injured Al Ferrara. Gaston put together a good year as did second year Jerry Morales. Both of these men look to have a bright future in San Diego.
Rico Petrocelli continued doing what he's been known for; hitting the ball out of the park as he belted 47 HR this year to lead the team. Bob Bailey who we obtained through a trade worked out well in the leadoff spot.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
Contract Negotiations
C Sonny Ruberto
Sonny has been a solid catcher for us, and we saw no reason not to extend his contract for the price that he was asking.
SS Rafael Robles
Raffy has been a good player for us. He provides very good depth for us in the IF and can play a variety of positions which makes him even more valuable to us in the long run.
SS Jerry Davanon
Jerry has excellent potential. He hasn't yet produced to the extent that we think he can, but once again, the price was just too much of a bargain for what this guy could turn in to.
LF Al Ferrara
It was finally time for Al to move on. He had played very well for us, but he was often injured and not in the lineup. The money that he was making was just too much to invest in a guy that you aren't sure can even be in the lineup every day.
CF Larry Stahl
Larry had been a good bench player and actually saw a lot of playing time due to the injuries of Brown and Ferrara, but with the young guys we have coming up, we saw no need to renew his contract.
P Dave Roberts
Roberts has kind of been on again off again as far as his production but he shows excellent growth potential and has been one of our best pitchers when he is on. We are hoping that he can bring that kind of ablity to the mound each time now that he won't have to worry about his contract.
CF Tony Gonzalez
Tony was another casualty of our youth movement. He has been very good for us the last few years, but it is now time to give the young guys a chance to shine.
CF Cito Gaston
Gaston was the youngest of the OF'ers that was up for renewal and he was coming off a pretty good year. He will probably find himself starting in the OF next to two younger players.
RF Ollie Brown
Brown is another guy that when healthy played well, but he just wasn't healthy enough to make him worth the money.
P Al McBean
Al has been very consistent out of the pen for us the last two years and he was rewarded for his good play and leadership abilities.
P Clay Kirby
Kirby has all the potential in the world and is ready for a breakout season. We are sure of it, so it was nice to lock him up for the next 5 years.
P Steve Arlin
Arlin has quietly been a staple of our starting 5. He doesn't get all the headlines, but we were quick to lock him in for the 3 years at a decent rate.
1B Nate Colbert
Nate hasn't been what we thought he was going to be. He has given us some power out of the 1B spot which is a must. Resigning him was up in the air, but when we talked about the price, it was a bargain we couldn't pass up.
Once again this year there was nothing really in the free agent market that we could afford at any position and in the pitching department there was nothing that would give us a considerable upgrade.

1972 Preview
Things certainly look promising for the 1972 season. The offense is starting to come in to it's own and looks like they will certainly be able to put up some runs this season. If the pitching can hold its own then the Padres should surely win some games. I'm thinking we might even win more than we lose for the first time in team history.
Sisk is starting to decline in his old age, but it looks like Randy Jones might be ready to turn in to that pitcher that everyone thought he would be. Mike Caldwell is poised to have another great season as he starts off as the ACE of the staff in every sense of the word.
Newcomer Jerry Bell will be playing his first full season for the Padres and we expect big things from him. The bullpen is still a bit shaky, but should be able to hold up enough to win some games for us.
Two rookies will find themselves in the starting lineup for us this year. With the release of Al Ferrara and Ollie Brown, OF's Johnny Grubb and Dwight Evans will get their chance to shine. Both should be just fine at the major league level.
Jerry Morales continues to get better and this should be a big year for him now that he has some real protection behind him. Rico still anchors the middle of the lineup and Nate Colbert finds himself a little bit further down in the lineup this year.

1972 All Star Break
The season has been good to San Diego thus far. We are playing far better than anyone could have imagined. The team is currently in first place. This doesn't seem to be any kind of fluke either.
The Padres have a 7 game lead over Houston and have gone 8-2 in their last 10 games. Johnny Grubb is playing spectacular ball and Dwight Evans leads the team in home runs at the all star break. At this point both of them have to be in the running for rookie of the year.
The pitching staff hasn't been what we expected though. Randy Jones still struggles and many believe it is because he doesn't have that one dominant pitch that he can throw when he HAS to get someone out.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1972 Review
The Padres finished 1972 over .500. This was the first time in team history that this has happened. San Diego found themselves in first place for a long time during the season and held an 8 game lead over Houston at one point. The youth and inexperience caught up with them and they subsequently lost the lead. It was a disappointment not to win the division but finishing 85-77 was very promising for the future.
The young guys played well during the year. Johnny Grubb batted over .300 and Dwight Evans showed some impressive power. Mike Caldwell continued to pitch well and Randy Jones is getting better every day. His stints in the minors appear to be over.
When most of the veterans were let go to begin the year there were some doubts in San Diego as to what direction the team was headed. GM James Barr silenced those critics though with the 1972 season and hopes to continue the progress.
So far the Padres have been a profitable team as well as a progressive team. Rumor is that a new stadium, or at least upgrades to the current stadium might be in the works.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
Contract Negotiations
SP Mike Caldwell
This was an easy call. You just don't let a guy like this walk away from the team. He has been everything that we could have hoped for and more. He has gotten better every year and shows no signs of slowing down.
C Ron Slocum
Ron is a valuable bench player and we were able to sign him to an extension at the league minimum. We couldn't pass that chance up.
P Randy Jones
The former face of the franchise, Randy has gotten better over the last two years and is finally starting to show why he was so touted coming up as a rookie in the majors. Randy still has some confidence issues but he has been working through those recently.
RP Jerry Bell
We picked up bell in a trade with the Brewers and he has been one of our most stable bullpen arms.
SP Tommie Sisk
Tommie's days had passed and his large salary was not one that we could hold on to without getting the production back. Sisk will be missed in the clubhouse and everything he did for the early days of the San Diego Padres will always be appreciated.
P Dick Selma
Selma was well liked but he failed to put up the numbers that the Padres were looking for. He has recently spent time down in AAA as well to try and get his "groove" back so to speak.
P Billy McCool
Billy was just making too much money for his talent level. His abilities had really started to fall lately and the Padres just grew impatient with him.
P Al McBean
Pretty much the same as McCool. GM James Barr isn't one to put up with dead space on the roster. These two were just sucking up payroll and there really was no reason to let it continue.
2B Horace Clarke
Clarke has picked up the pace recently and was rewarded with a new contract. He now becomes one of the highest paid Padres. Clarke will continue to set the pace for the offense.
3B Bob Bailey
Bob has been one of the most consistent offensive players since we singed him and he is very valuable to the offense. Van Kelly is waiting in the wings, but it still a few more years before he is ready. Locking up Bailey just seemed like the right thing to do.
P Gary Gentry
Gary is young and had a pretty good year last year. Teams are always in the market for good pitching and when you find some in free agency that is young and you can afford it, you have to jump at it.
.
Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
I have to admit, I just started reading your dynasty and absolutely love it. It's interesting to see another Padres dynasty too, as I have started one in 1970.
