Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
End of season 1969
Well we won 65 games which is 9 games better than the prediction of 56. The season wasn't a total loss. Randy Jones got some much needed experience, even if it was during a 20 game losing season.
Al Ferrara and Ollie Brown had promising seasons. Each one of them hit 20 homeruns. Tony Gonzalez, the Padres best all around player lead the team in average at a .269 clip. The offense certainly had it's struggles and the pitching staff wasn't too good either. The hopes are that some of the young guys on the squad will develop through spring training and that the Padres will be back for 1970 ready to compete.

Contract Negotiations
Its time to talk money with the following players;
Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
CF Tony Gonzales
We were able to sign Tony through 1971 at a discounted price due to his off season by his standards. 3 years $155,000
Al McBean
Al didn't have a great season but it wasn't bad either. We don't like to just ditch players, especially when they are willing to take a paycut. 3 years $90,000
Jack Baldschun
Jack is just going to waste away in someone's minor league system. It isn't going to be ours though. We let Jack go and we wish him nothing but success in the future.
Chris Cannizzaro
Chris had an off season and we just couldn't justify giving him a pay raise that he didn't earn. Cut.
Ollie Brown
Ollie was arguably our best offensive player this year. He lead the team in homeruns and was a close second in average. Ollie is only 25 so we signed him for 3 years at $85,000
Roberto Pena
Pena was a bench player for us that saw some significant playing time due to injuries to both John Sipin and Jerry Davanon. 2 years $16,000
Al Ferrara
Al was our biggest power threat in the lineup and played realitively well. He is injury prone though. 3 years $72,000
Larry Stahl
Larry played well coming off the bench, but I'm not sure how much we can afford to pay our bench players. We did make a pretty good profit during the year though. 3 years $40,000
Dick Selma
Dick is young and was decent for us this year. He pitched better than his numbers suggest. We got Dick to take a paycut and sign for 4 years $78,000
Billy McCool
Billy missed 5 weeks during the season but was a reliable bullpen arm, which you can never have too many of. 4 years $110,000
Dick Kelley
Dick pitched very well for us out of the pen and was rewarded with a 5 year deal at $75,000
Tom Dukes
Dukes came up for arbitration as we were going to free agency. He was resigned for one year at $25,000
Johnny Podres
Podres decided to retire at the ripe old age of 37. He had a sub par season and wasn't exactly happy about being in the pen in San Diego. At his age he was not willing to play on a team that was several years away from contention. It was mentioned that he might be offered a spot on the coaching staff.
Payroll: $1,151,160
Payroll Budget: $2,040,403
Cash: $1,414,493
Next up is free agency. GM Barr is looking to find some promising young guys to fill out the roster and take over some spots of need. We'll see what we can come up with.

1970 Free Agent Signings
Just to let you know, I am limiting myself to 2 free agent signings when my team finishes under .500 and only one is allowed when finishing over .500 for the season.
There wasn't much out there in the way of pitching, so the Padres and GM Barr decided to upgrade the offense somewhat with some signings of relatively young infielders.
Rico will add some much needed power to the middle of the lineup and Horace should fill in nicely at the leadoff spot.

1970 Opening Day
The 1970 season is coming up. The Padres still don't have the pitching staff that they would like, but the offense has been upgraded. The organization is hoping that the decision made by GM Barr to dump extra money in to the scouting and fam team development will pay off in the near future. The success of the Padres relies heavily on the development of many of their younger players.
P Randy Jones how enjoyed a horrible season last year will start this one on the DL. He suffered a severed knee ligament at the end of last year and finds hmself out for the next 2-3 months. Jerry Davanon will miss the next two weeks with a broken wrist. Davanon has lost his starting position to Rico Petrocelli during the offseason.
1B Nate Colbert hasn't shown the improvement that was hoped from him this offseason, but the future still looks very bright for him with the Padres. Youngsters Morales and Grubb continue to develop and Dwight Evans looks as if he may be able to make the big league club within the next two years if everything moves as planned with him.
Rookie Mike Caldwell finds himself in the starting rotation this year. He will begin as the number 5 starter and should see limited action during the year. It is hoped that bringing him along slowly will lessen the chance of him burning out.

1970 Ammy Draft:
Lots of pitching, because right now that is what we need the most. Andujar should become one of our aces in the future. The rest look to be good prospects but we won't know for quite some time. Reynolds was the best position player left in the 6th round and he also sported the best projected helath rating which is big for a SS.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1970 All Star Break
It has been an outstanding season up to this point. The San Diego Padres find themselves over .500 through half of the season and only 5 games back of first place. GM James Barr is being hailed as a genius with what he has done with the team, but he still says that he has done nothing. Barr says that all the credit needs to be given to the players and the managers for the job that they have done.
One can only imagine where the Padres might be in the standings if they had not gone through so many injuries so far this year. OF Al Ferrara, a big part of the offense last year, has missed most of the first half of the season. He went down with a broken him very early on in the season and has just now gotten back in to the lineup.
Tommie Sisk has beenon the DL this year as well as multiple stints for the young pitcher Mike Caldwell. Randy Jones was just recently called back up from AAA to fill in for Sisk while he is injured. In his only start this year Jones went eight innings giving up 6 hits and 2 earned runs to get the win. At the moment it appears that his stint in AAA for rehab is doing him well at this point.
Rico Petrocelli is doing exactly whathe was brought to San Diego to do. Currently he is hitting .269 with 18 home runs at the break. Nate Colbert is hitting just a hair over .200 but has still managed to knock 9 balls out of the park.
CF Tony Gonzalez has been playing great so far this year. With Rico hitting behind him he finally has the protection he needs to see some good pitches to hit, and he is hitting them. He's hitting .318 with 13 HR and 49 RBI.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1970 Season Recap
The year began well. The San Diego Padres found themselves above .500 at the halfway point of the year. At the time they were only 5 games back of first place and things looked very promising for the 1970 season.
Things changed however. The Padres suffered through many nagging injuries to their starting rotation and some poor play form a few guys that they were counting on to provide.
OF Al Ferrara found himself being benched in favor of rookie Jerry Morales. Morales showed that he truly is ready for the major leagues as he posted a .279 average in the 41 games that he played. he also added 5 HRs as well and provided some protection for leadoff hitter Horace Clarke.
Free Agent signing Horace Clarke, didn't turn out like most expected. He struggled through most of the year. Many believe that had to do with the fact that Ferrara who was behind him for most of the year, was not hitting and subsequently Horace wasn't getting anything to swing at.
Nate Colbert, who was bothered by minor injuries throughout the year, only managed to hit a shade above .200 and hit 16 HRs, both totals that were expected to be much higher going in to the season.
Team MVP, without a doubt was SS Rico Petrocelli. Rico hit .272 with 31 HR and 99 RBI. He provided leadership and protection for some of the other guys in the lineup like Tony Gonzalez. Tony also enjoyed a good year, he hit .285 with 20 HR and 73 RBI.
The pitching staff was once again lead by Tommie Sisk. He pitched well but was unable to come up with the win in most cases. Rookie Mike Caldwell posted a 4.01 ERA which is very promising to see. Randy Jones pitched sparingly in the major leagues this year but is showing some improvement in both the movement of his pitches and his command over their placement. I would look for him to be back in the majors for good at the start of 1971.

1970 Contract Renewals / Free Agency
Tom Dukes was very effective for us in the pen and we felt the need to give him some job security. He may not have the best stuff in the world, but at this point we are more concerned about production and that is what we have been getting out of him.
What can we say about Tommie Sisk. He has been the most valuable player for the Padres for the last two years. He has pitched extremely well even though his record doesn't appear to show it.
No free agent signings this year. There just doesn't seem to be any big name pitchers out there with any youth. At this point we believe it is more wise to concentrate our finances towards scouting and the farm system. We have several quality youngsters in the farm system currently, and we ultimately hope to build our team in that manner. This will both help keep costs down as well as build up some fan support for the local guys.

1971 Season Preview
The lineup is pretty much the same as it was last year. Clarke will once again lead off and we can only hope that he can improve on what he was able to do last year. There really is no reason to believe that last year was anything other than an "off" year.
Big things are expected from second year man Morales in LF, and Rico and Gonzalez should continue to put up solid numbers as they have in the past. We are hoping that Colbert will finally come in to his own and put it all together for a break out season. If the offense plays well then we should be able to improve on our 70 wins from last season.
Sisk is back as the ace and should be able to be a solid figure for the starting rotation. Caldwell is looking to improve on his wonderful rookie season, and if he does that he could very well be on his way to being the ace of the staff. The bullpen remains the same as last year and should be solid again. Randy Jones will begin the season in AAA, but I would look for him to be called up some point before the all star break and should remain there for a good long time.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
1971 Amateur Draft
SP Rich Mahler (49/91)
The Padres went with pitching with the first pick in the 1971 draft. It was an obvious move. Rick was the best player available no doubt. His health is a bit of a concern and he does currently throw too many pitches. If we can get him to concentrate on just a few he should turn in to a very good major league pitcher.
SP Roy Branch (47/92)
Another starting pitcher is exactly what the Padres need. Some have voiced concern over the large numbers of pitchers that have been drafted in the last two years, but if the Padres can't use them, they can always trade them to pick up some other pieces.
1B Dave Revering (49/81)
Dave is a very durable player who should become an everyday first baseman in the league. He has good contact and power, and he seems to be pretty good with the glove as well. He may never win an MVP, but he should play in this league for quite some time.
RP Victor Bernal (46/82)
Victor has a good amount of velocity and he has outstanding control for a young guy. Currently he only throws two pitches, but that is something that can be overcome in spring training.
1B Tim Ireland (51/82)
Tim has a lot of power and contact already at 18 years old. He has a good bit of speed for a 1B, which could land him in the OF possibly in the future. He has an amazing eye and hits a changeup and curveball especially well in his early career.
RP Jay Franklin (46/77)
Jay is a bit of a mystery, as is any 6th round pick in the ammy draft. He works very hard and could find himself to be a producting major league pitcher. The Padres are willing to be patient with him and see just how he turns out.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
The first trade of 1971 was one that we didn't see coming at all. After the ammy draft Montreal showed up at our door trying to offload some salary. We were more than willing to negotiate with them in this situation. Our starting 3B was a player that needed to be in AAA more than in the majors and we had a fair amount of prospects that we could deal. When the Expos offered up Bailey for three marginal prospects that we really had no future plans for, we jumped at the chance to upgrade our offensive lineup.
Another good thing is that if Bailey doesn't play well we aren't stuck with his contract for very long, and we can cut him if needed. If he does play well then we have the chance to sign him long term. At age 28 he is still in the good years of his career and should be able to help the Padres and provide some protection to some of the other guys in the lineup.
