Good offensive game, but we just can't pull it out. Nice to see the bats come to life in this one, but it sure does stink to come back and then just blow it in the ninth like that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall not a good week. Brown and Ferrara are back in the lineup, but at this point it doesn't look like it matters. Good pitching is still not coming away with wins, and we continue to give up the game in the later innings.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
We find ourselves still only 6 games out despite the bad streak we just had. At 24-29 anything is still possible and it isn't too late for the team to turn it round.
We have a healthy lineup and some good pitching right now so we make be able to make a run. Randy Jones seems to be declining a big even though he has pitched well his last few starts. He finally has his ERA under 6.00 but there are big time rumors swirling that he is having some mechanical problems and even some health concerns.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
June 1969 - The Weather Is Still Good
Heading in to June the weather is still nice in San Diego. The Padres have hit a few skids along the way but overall the season is far from a failure or disaster that some may have thought it would turn in to.
The team has been tough and has played very hard and well together. Several young players find themselves being thrust in to starting roles, and for the most part they are responding very well. Everyone except for a few players seem to be playing up to their skill level, which is just fine and dandy.
If the Padres can string together a good month or two they could be sitting pretty come next season with a good batch of confidence.
GM Barr isn't being paraded around San Diego as a genius, yet, but if he turns the Padres in to a winner in 2-3 seasons, you can rest assured he will be the best known man in MLB.
The amateur draft comes up on the 3rd of June. This gives the Padres the chance to pick up some quality youth to help develop the team for the long haul.

Selma gets the win after pitching a heck of a game. The offense explodes as the Padres hit 4 homeruns and take this one easily.

Jones gets his first win of the season. He pitched well in 8 innings of work and only threw 89 pitches. Two big wins over the first place Braves is huge right now, especially with the manner that we won those games.

Ammy draft time. The Padres had a pretty good haul in the draft. We addressed some pitching needs, landed a great OF prospect and picked up a few guys that should be able to help in the future.

Sisk takes the loss in game one agains the Reds as we get shutout. Kind of hurts to get shut out like that after scoring double digits in the previous two games.
Kirby gets another win in game two of the series. Colbert goes yard for the 12th time this year which leads the team.

We took the series from the Reds, but then turn around and get shelled by the Astros. Randy Jones pitched terribly again and is in dire straits right now. He is in big time jeopardy of losing his position in the starting rotation. However, the biggest problem is who to put there that would do any better than he is.

Well the sweep is complete in San Diego. I haven't checked yet, but it seems like we have a heck of a time beating the Astros. This was a long week with no days off in between any games. The Padres keep at it next week with 7 more games in a row.
There should be some minor lineup adjustments going in to next week.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
Some changes are taking place in SD. SS Jerry Davanon has moved down to the number 8 hole due to his ineptitude on offense. Starting pitcher Dick Selma finds himself on the DL again which will give the starting rotation some problems. Pitcher Randy Jones finds himself in trouble of being sent back down to the minors. P Mike Caldwell has been moved up to AAA after a strong showing in AA the past few months. He could find himself in the majors before too long if things keep going the way they have been with Jones.
The Padres have determined that now is the time to really start investing the profits that they are seeing from ticket sales and concessions. They have moved to the front of the pack in Farm spending as well as scouting. The medical staff remains ranked in the top five as it has been throughout the year.

We lost another close one which is becoming something of a common occurence these days. After one long week we start another one. 14 days with 14 games is going to tough on the whole team no doubt. We did pull one out against the Cardinals which is promising conisdering that Randy Jones when the complete game beating Steve Carlton.

Two more one run games. 1-3 so far in the week isn't looking good, but we are playing relatively well. The offense hasn't been able to get on track, but with the injuries no one can really blame them. Colbert has been pretty sore the whole week, Canizzaro went down for a few days and Ferrara has been back on the DL as well. Hopefully we can keep chugging along and get some sort of consistency going before the hole gets too big to dig out of.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
The week didn't exactly end like we wanted it to, but that is what is going to happen with a very young team like this. Randy Jones did have two pretty good starts and might be holding off that demotion to AAA for just a little while longer. Sisk continues to pitch very well and keep the team in just about every game when he is on the mound, which is BIG with the team that we have offensively.
Nate Colbert isn't hitting for the average, but the power is certainly there. In time he could develop to be one of the better offensive threats in the league. Right now he has to be making a serious push for Rookie of the Year.
The pitching continues to be hit or miss which is really starting to wear on the confidence of the team as a whole. Hopefully things will start to level out and we can get on some sort of groove going in to the later months of the season.

Interview With Randy Jones
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/play..._autograph.jpg
In a recent edition of the San Diego times there was an interview published with starting pitcher Randy Jones. This was the first time that the media had been given access to Jones. The 19 year old rookie had been shielded from the media until now, and with good reason. His situation is a delicate one, one that cannot be failed at.
Clif MacEachron (CM) interviewed Randy Jones (RJ), and then later met with GM James Barr (JB) to get his reaction.
CM: There has been a lot of talk about you being rushed to the major leagues, how do you feel about those comments?
RJ: You know, you can read in to that kind of stuff all you want. I'm ready to be here, some others on the team, well I can't speak for them, but I personally have been ready for the majors since the day that I graduated from high school.
CM: Those are some big words, but the record and the stats seem to say otherwise Randy.
RJ: There are a lot of reasons that pitchers lose ball games, it isn't always on the starter's shoulders. Bullpens can blow leads, some times the offense just doesn't show up, you know, all that kind of stuff.
CM: So are you saying that you would be a better pitcher on another team?
RJ: Well yeah. I mean just look at some of the games I have been in this year. I pitche darn good and don't come out of there with the win.
CM: Well yes, but you have also had some pretty bad games, what do you believe is the cause for that?
RJ: Well I mean, you can only take so much losing before it starts to get to you. You get sick of it, it makes it hard to go out there every day and give it your all when it doesn't seem like some of the other guys care as much as you do.
CM: Are you accusing your teammates of nothing playing as hard as they should be?
RJ: Well, I guess you could say that.
CM: Well who in particular would you say hasn't been up to par?
RJ: Whoa now, I ain't gonna get caught in that trap. I'm not gonna start naming names in the paper.
CM: Surely you have heard the rumors that you will be sent down to AAA in favor of Mike Caldwell, how do you feel about that?
RJ: That isn't going to happen.
CM: And why not?
RJ: They have put too much faith in me. It would hurt them too much to send me down to the minors.
CM: So you don't think that they are concerned with your performance?
RJ: Why should they?
CM: Well Randy, your numbers, to be honest, have been quite horrible for most of the year. You started out 0-9 with an ERA above 6.00 for most of the year so far.
RJ: Stats don't tell the whole truth.
CM: What are your thoughts on where this team is heading? Do you like what the future holds for the San Diego Padres?
RJ: I haven't really thought about it. I probably won't be around all that long either.
CM: Why do you feel that way?
RJ: I'm pretty sure that they will try to trade me away for some more talent to help the ball club. Besides, when my contract comes up, I'm not sure they will be able to afford me.
CM: Well, all very interesting words Mr. Jones. What do you think GM Barr will have to say about your responses to these questions?
RJ: Why would he have anything to say at all? I haven't done anything wrong.
Below is a recap of the interview with GM Barr immediately following the Q&A with Randy Jones.
CM: As you can see Mr. Barr, Randy had quite a bit to say in his interview with me. What are your thoughts on this?
JB: Randy is still young, he has a lot to learn. I don't think any of this is very damaging.
CM: Mr. Barr, he basically said the team isn't trying hard enough and that he would like to be playing somewhere else.
JB: Like I said, he is young. The game is very difficult and it is very hard for a young man to adjust to something like this. I'm sure that he feels that way. Once he talks to his teammates he will see that playing every day takes it's toll on your body, and some games you just don't have it to give.
CM: What about his comments that he won't be in San Diego very long?
JB: He obviously feels that he is very talented and thinks that we will trade him for more talent to improve the ball team. He's using his head. The only difference is that most guys don't have the guts to say something like that in an interview.
CM: You don't think that was a hint that he would like to be traded now?
JB: No, even if it was we have no intentions of trading Randy.
CM: Is there any truth to the rumor that he might be sent down to AAA in favor of Mike Caldwell?
JB: No, Mike isn't ready for the big leagues yet. He still has to work on some of his pitches and his command a little bit before he is ready.
CM: What about Randy just going down?
JB: It's possible. When you make a committment to a guy like this and he struggles, you have to do what you can to help him out. If going down to AAA seems like the best way to help Randy, then that is what will happen.
