San Diego got smacked around in this one as Bolin tossed the complete game shutout. Only managed three hits which is never good, but we were playing against the first place Giants, which right now are favored to win the division and are generally considered the best team in the National League.

Brown and Ferrara both go deep, but they were only solo shots which doesn't help the Padres in this one. Jones pitches horribly again and San Diego gets slapped around by the superior team from San Fran.

Gonzalez continues to hit well as does Ferrara. Both of them homer in this game, but it still isn't enough to overcome the offense of the Giants. Sisk, the Padres current ace, got knocked around a little bit in this one.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
Weekly Recap
4/21/1969 - 4/27/1969
2B John Sipin remainson the DL for approximately another 190 days. His broken wrist is taking quite some time to heal. Meanwhile Jose Arcia has been filling in for Sipin and has posted a .273 average thus far. For now it appears as if Sipin going down might actually work out for the Padres.
OF Ollie Brown leads the team with a .301 batting average, Al Ferrara leads the team with 7 HRs, Tommie Sisk has posted 3 wins so far this season and sports an ERA of 3.38.
The Padres currently lead the league in average attendance at 43,000 per home game which is very good considering the way that they have played recently. The fans remain excited about the team and continue to show their support even during the tough games.
With the lowest payroll in the National League at 1.3 million the San Diego Padres have been able to turn over a profit of 300K so far in the young season. The future seasons appear bright if they remain on the same patch as they are currently.

We are currently rated number 5 in both scouting and farm system. We are 10th in medical. I'm considering trying to upgrade some positions but I'm not quite sure I want to. If I can find some young talent then I might try to make some deals, but I think the team is so far away that it might not be worth it to really up my payroll at this point, especially if the team starts to struggle later in the season.
Current standings in the NL West:
San Francisco18-9 --
Houston 15-12 3.0
San Diego 12-13 5.0
Atlanta 13-14 5.0
Los Angeles 11-15 6.5
Cincinnati 10-17 8.0

Jones pitched well which is a good sign but he was unable to get the win. Dukes came in and continues to be a great situational reliever for the Padres. San Diego scores two in the bottom of the ninth to win yet another game at home.

Sisk pitched another beauty of a ball game and got another win while lowering his team leading ERA to under 3.00. Ferrara hit another home run to bring his total to 8 for the month of April. Certainly a lot more production than was every thought to come from him. McBean comes in for the 9th and allows one hit and no runs to pick up his 5th save. Two wins in a row, very promising to end the month on a mini-streak.
Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
Monthly Review - April 1969
Month's Record
W 12 - L 13
Overall Record
W 12 - L 13
Overall a pretty impressive start to the 1969 season for the San Diego Padres. Despite the pitching troubles they have found a way to remain right at the .500 level. Pitcher Tommie Sisk already has 4 wins and has an ERA under 3.00 which lands him on the National League leader board in that respect. OF Al Ferrara leads the team with 8 round trippers.
The team full of rookies has been able to hold it's own up to this point in the season. The wear and tear of an entire 162 game schedule may get to this team at some point, but up to now the only significant injury has been to 2B John Sipin. Sipin broke his wrist and is currently out for around 6 months. He was replaced in the lineup by Jose Arcia. Arcia, despite being thrown out quite often when attempting to steal has done a more than adequate job of filling in.
The team batting stats look like this at the end of April:

Starting the season Davanon was one of the biggest mysteries. It wasn't known if he was going to able to hold down the leadoff spot in the lineup. To this point he has done just that. He is hitting a modes .253 but is second on the team in OBP at .363, which is exactly where you want your leadoff man to rank on your team, near the top.
Van Kelly and Nate Colbert have struggled with average, but Nate leads the team in RBI with 19. Al Ferrara often finds himself being subbed out in the later innings in favor of Larry Stahl's defense, but even so he has still found a way to lead the team in HR with 8.
The offense in general is playing well enough to win for sure.
The pitching stats at the end of April look like this:
Code:

Arlin, Steve SDP 7.0 5.14 1 1 0 0 0 5 8 14.14
This is of course troubling for the team as well as GM Barr. Tommie Sisk has been effective, but the starting rotation in general has pitched very poorly. Randy Jones has walked more than he has struck out, the same goes for Clay Kirby. Both have pitched better recently and it is hoped that pattern continues. If not then the Padres could find themselves in a bad spot in a month or two. Billy McCool and Tom Dukes have been solid in the pen and despite a high ERA Al McBean has managed to secure 5 saves already this season.
When asked about the direction of his team, JC Barr had this to say.
As of right now we are pleased. We certainly have some holes on the team that need fixing, but this has to be played very carefully. We need to manage this team for the future as well as the present. We are committed to the develpment of our young players and do not want to jeopardize the future by trading them away for veterans at this poin.
We find ourselves only one game under .500 which is certainly a mental victory for most of us at this stage in the season. It is still too early to gauge where we will end up at the conclusion of 162 games, so if there are any moves, don't expect them to be blockbusters.
At this point we are trying to stabalize the team and prepare for the future while attempting to win as many games as we can in the present.
GM Barr was also asked about his adjustment to the move from Virginia.
It truly is a different world out here. Everything moves so much slower back home. Less roads and highways, less people, just seems like people are in less of a hurry back east. The political stuff, well that is pretty much the same everywhere you go. I just try to keep out of it and move on my way. 1969 is a tough year for us Americans, and to be honest I'm just glad that I am able to give back to society. I'm glad that I am able to provide some entertainment for the good people of San Diego and other parts of Cali. You know it truly is great to get paid to do something that you love.

Really like the dynasty. I'm generally not a fan of retro dynasties (don't know why), but I really like your setup and presentation. Nice work.

Thank you. I'm glad that some others find it entertaining. I am enjoying it, and this is the first one that I have ever done that had any real depth to it.

Scored a ton of runs...again but can't come up with the win. If the Padres pitching staff could keep teams from scoring over 4 runs a game things would be good in San Diego. Colbert continues to hit and Ferrara goes deep AGAIN.

Another one run game that we can't seem to win. This one especially hurt because Al Ferrara went down with an ankle fracture for three weeks. Larry Stahl has been put in the lineup to replace the power hitting Ferrara.

San Diego was able to sneak by the Reds again. Selma pitched a wonderfull game giving up only one run against a pretty impressive Reds' offense. If we can get some more games like this from our starters we should be in good shape. On the down side OF Ollie Brown goes down for three weeks with a Wrist Fracture. Youngster Cito Gaston takes his place in the lineup.

The losses by one run are really starting to get frustrating. It seems as if any time someone pitches very well the offense decides to struggle. Randy Jones put together another good game though. Which is very promising.
Stahl has gone 2-14 in his first three starts of the year, and Cito Gaston will get his chance to show what he can do next week as he starts in RF.

Re: 1969 Padres - From VA to CA
How do you feel about the recent skid that the Padres have been going through?
I'm not sure that I would call it a skid. There are 162 games in a season, every team is going to go through streaks during the year. This is just one of them for us. We had two vital parts of our offense go down with injury so its a tough time for us right now.
You now find yourslef 8 games back of the division lead. Is this cause for concern?
Well of course it is. You never want to be in even second place, so when you are falling behind it is always cause for concern.
Do you have anything planned to get back up near the top of the division?
Not at this time. We have been looking around the league at some of the younger pitchers available and right now the asking price is just too high for us to pay. We are going to stick it out with our guys and fight through these injuries. We will be winning again soon.
Randy Jones has been pitching well lately. What do you attribute this too, could it be that maybe he was slightly injured?
Randy was never hurt. He is pitching well right now because he is a heck of a pitcher. Randy has been working hard and been paying attention to the scouting reports, and all of that is finally starting to pay off for him.
With Stahl and Gaston in the OF for the next three weeks does that become an area of weakness?
Not at all. Stahl has played well off the bench and there is no reason to believe that he won't keep it up. Gaston is a very talented young man and I have full confidence that he can fill in in RF and do just fine.

No offnese, but great pitching from Kirby as he goes 6 strong innings. The pitching has been promising but now it seems like the offense, which was a strength, has now become a spot for weakness.

The offense and the pitching did it's job until the 9th inning when they allowed 4 runs and were unable to come back in the bottom of the inning.

Arling got a rare start and actually pitched well, but once again the bullpen blew it in the 9th.
