Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3344825
Can things getting anymore ignorant. Who bleeping cares whats buried under the concrete, if someone wants to waste a $100(or whatever the going rate is) on a Ortiz jersey and then bury it under 1000's of tons of concrete be my guest. The Yankees are talking about pressing charges against the guy, maybe the judge should order him to wear a Yankees jersey and make him attend all Yankees home games this year.
-
Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
Honestly I thought it was a great move by the guy. He took pics and everything lol. I don't care much for the Red Sox but I hate the Yankees. Too funny.
-
Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, I think. Why in the heck would you bury a jersey in the concrete of a job site that you're working on? Pure ignorance; I guess to some people losing your job to try to start a baseball curse is acceptable, and obviously practiced.
I honestly think that the man should be fired (if he hasn't been already), and the man should be barred from working in the state of NY. Now now, yes a little harsh, but come on; I have been around construction all my life. I guarantee you that if a homeowner had his home tainted as a joke, basically; Well, the homeowner wouldn't be too pleased, and would most definitely complain to the company. Now, this is sort of like the example I gave you. Homeowner = Hank Steinbrenner, Home = (new) Yankee Stadium, Company (probably many companies) = All the workers working on the stadium, including the ignoramus worker that buried the shirt in the concrete. I kinda see why Hank and the crew are a little mad at the idiot... It's also like me walking in someone from India's home, and eating a hamburger.

He did it to set a "jinx" or a "curse" on the Yankees, and he wasn't actually employed, I believe. He refused the job because he refused to ever set foot in or near Yankee Stadium, but then he came up with the idea to curse the Yankees by burying the jersey underneath, so he called up his friend or something to give him a ride to the site and he said he'd help the construction, and then he buried the jersey. At least, that's the jist of what I got on Sportscenter.

Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
Ah ok, thanks. I didn't get the complete story, but just the basics. Still, that guy is an idiot.
Also, how doe he survive in the Bronx, NY? Or even have friends in the Bronx, NY for that matter, lol.
-
Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
Exactly what Houston said.
And come seriously. Your rival team is building their stadium. Tell me you don't at least consider trying something. Pissing on the new lawn....something.
-
Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
Lol, no I would do absolutely nothing at all.
I guess us Yankee fans just have more class than some Sawx fans. :p
-
Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
Yep when I see Steinbrenner I think class. Actually I think of my Angels stomping them every post season ;)

Too bad the Halos will be sitting home come October.

Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
When are they going to dig up the White Sox jerseys from Wrigley then? :p

Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
Oh and White Sox fans are so stupid they probably buried a jersey too but with the fan still in it.
-
Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
I think the Yankees look utterly rediculous taking it so seriously, I mean come on "a bad, bad, thing"? pressing charges? They need to realize that they are in the entertainment business and to press charges would be pretty juvenile.
-
Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
It is a dirty, underhanded trick.
And as the organization that used the Kansas City A's as it's drafting puppet, paying them off and stealing all their prospects, the Yankees can certainly identify dirty, underhanded maneuvers. :D

I know that you're a BoSox fan AOW but to be fair, Charlie Finley was the one at fault for doing that. The Yankees were simply there to take advantage.
-
Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
True - and heck, I can't really bring something up from 40-50 years ago, and pretend I have a grudge about it. Heck, I wasn't even (-25) back then.
Plus, my Sox have that whole 'last team to integrate' thing hanging over us, so we're no saints. Just seems that the more I learn about the Yanks, the more bad stuff there is to unearth...
-
Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
Uhm...it wasn't Finley. One of Finley's first press conferences involved him pointing a bus at New York and setting it on fire to symbolize the end of their 'special relationship.' You're thinking of his predecessor, Arnold Johnson.
Johnson was a long time business associate of the then Yankee owners. He owned Yankee Stadium until the AL forced him to sell if he wanted the KCA. He also owned Blues Stadium, home of the Yank's top KC farm team. He sold that to the city, which renamed it Municipal Stadium and leased it back to him for the Athletics.
His company continued to manage Yankee Stad. Del Webb's (one of NYY's owners) construction company built Municipal Stad. up to Major League standards. Johnson also held a mortgage on the Yanks.
That kinda sounds like a special relationship to me, not that the NYY simply 'took advantage' like any good team might.
*******
I don't like the Yanks, but I have to go with an earlier poster. This is really like sabotaging someone's home. (Yes, I realize a jersey is going to do squat to the integrity of Yankee Stadium, but that's not my point.) At best this is an extremely low class maneuver.
Being in the entertainment industry doesn't mean they have to put up with s***. Nor should they. In fact, if the Yanks DON'T make a strong stance I imagine a good number of their fans won't be happy.
I suppose much depends on what the Yanks would want to charge this guy with. If it's some felony, then we're probably in the overkill range. A misdemeanor along the lines of vandalism might be in order.

My bad, it was Johnson. I remember now.
Still, the point stands. The Yankees organization themselves didn't install Johnson... at least, not that I remember. The other owners should have (and will, today) blocked Johnson from becoming an owner. I'll give the point that ethically the Yankees organization shouldn't have taken advantage of the Athletics in the way they did, but they needed to have Johnson and Parke Carroll there to actually do it.

Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
I would think that it would have a curse on the visiting clubs team...which would benefit the Yankees...it could have been played off like that... ;)
And when the yankees removed the shirt, they could have said "we want all teams to have a fair chance at beating us" ...
-
Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
Now that's true, boomboom. That would've been funny :)
-
Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
when I first heard this, I thought it was bull. Great story though!! The truth can be stranger than fiction. Examples:
The Jersey...hopefully they get a lot from the Jimmy Fund auction. If I had the $$$ I would buy it. GREAT conversation piece.
The hawk at Fenway attacking "A-Rod"
The person who brought a Yankee cap to the top of Mt. Everest to burn it.
Red Sox / Yankees never takes a day off!!

Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
Ugh-
Do we need to spend many man-hours and taxpayers dollars to dig up a shirt that someone put in a stadium?
Awesome idea by the guy who did it, but it failed when he told everyone!
Hank Steinbrenner making such a big deal of this reiterates the point that Hank Steinbrenner is quite a stupid fellow.
LOL, did Georgie inject all of his kids with "Exaggerate the importance of everything in life and do ridiculous things just for media attention" medicine when they were born?

Well that wouldn't be up to Yankees... but anyway the Bronx DA has said that there won't be any charges. The club is still considering civil action to recover the costs involved.

Taxpayer dollars? Zero, which is exactly what was spent. If the Yankees want to spend $50 grand on what was essentially a publicity/marketing move, that's up to them.

Yeah, this idea of a sports/entertainment corporation doing things for media attention is clearly a Steinbrenner exclusive.

But the Steinbrenners have made a business of cheap gimmicky ways to get in the headlines ("Red Sox Nation- what a bunch of EXPLETIVE that is"). They've made a business of bragging about their team, even when there's nothing to brag about ("Red Sox as World Champions. What a bunch of EXPLETIVE that is"- LOL). They make their players and fans look worse then they actually are (If the Yankees were a modest dynasty, or at least a team who had a few miracle victories, then we would all hate them much less).
Yeah, other owners do stuff for media attention too. But none do it quite as stupidly and laughably as the Steinbrenners.

Hyperbole.
It's not as though the Mets, Red Sox, White Sox, Angels, etc... don't ever do similar things. The only thing that the Yankees are really guilty of is being in the largest media market in the world and being a winning team.

That being, of course, the difference between "tradition" and "winning one occasionally."

Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
In the last 10 years:
New York: 3
Boston: 2
St. Louis: 1
Chicago (AL): 1
Florida: 1
LAA: 1
Arizona: 1
It's better (or worse, depending on your view point) if you go 15 or 20 years back. I'll leave you all to draw your own conclusions...

Nope, it's not hyperbole. If it were hyperbole then I'd say that every second of every day a Steinbrenner is doing something stupid.
What have the owners of the Mets, Red Sox, White Sox, Angels, etc.. done? I have yet to hear of any other owners mouthing off or doing ridiculous things.

Re: Bo Sox jersey in Yankees stadium
Kenny Williams(White Sox GM) has put his foot in his mouth a couple of time in the last few years, nothing like old Stine.

How ironic and stupid. The team with by far the largest payroll in Baseball (sports?) wants to recover a couple bucks for tearing down their own stadium for something that they had no way of knowing whether it was actually there?
Wow, the stupidity continues.

That would have been outstanding! Someone says "I buried a Red Sox jersey underneath your new stadium!" They dig up the stadium and there's nothing there. That would have made me laugh hysterically.

Would have been funny, but in this case other workers told them roughly where it was... it wasn't just the case that one guy said it was there somewhere (the guy who first reported it had no idea where it was; he'd just heard about it in a bar), there was confirmation.

Probably much like both the Yankees and the Mets recently pursuing charges against fans who tried to steal "souvenirs" from their respective stadiums' final seasons, meant to deter anyone else from trying something similar. And again, there was little doubt that it was there; the report was corroborated by other workers.

C'mon though if you hired someone to build you a house and the guy placed somethingint he ground to "curse" you don't tell me you wouldn't be miffed!
