WTF!
Everyone seemed to have lost posts. I dunno what happened.
I didn't! I wonder why they are going away though???
Do you have enough to notice? :p
Hand is up too
Seriously though, is this actually a problem?
no
I lost a bunch too. And yes, it is a problem. It's affecting my plan to overtake HGM as the #1 poster.
lol im catch up!
well yes, because my goal is to be the #1 poster. ;) so quit deleting post ohms or whoever is.
deleting posts only means you have something to hide. This is what nystienbrenner did.
oh, I found the forum of deleted threads...wow
lol... good luck with that.
:)
heh
Better there than cluttering my my screen.
;)
If it really bothers you, put them back...
they've been dead for longer than a month though, so you may as well bump them with a few thousand more posts. have fun!
:)
Honestly, I still don't get the whole post padding thing. I really don't care at all, I just don't understand it. If you want post count... then post! Nothing wrong with that. What does post count mean though when 400+ posts are nothing but one number or word or whatever? At least the Word Association and The Name Game threads are actually games.
Ah well. I was curious to see who would make a stink about it, if anyone.
*shrug*
Oh, I dunno, Ohms... I mean when the Aliens take over our planet at some future date - I have it, on good authority, just prior to the issuing of the BM2069 Beta - they will regard these forums as a sort of time-capsule, indicating the mentality of us Earthlings.
I see it all, now...the Alien anthropologists shaking their (little; pointed) heads, pityingly, over our writings...
I'll give you 400 posts back for your next number 1 pick when you decide to come back to BBMO? :D
No league will have a rule against this. :p
The regular forums don't have a rule against it either! :p
Actually, if I wanted to make a big deal about it I'd do something like... this.
*evil grin*
aight, fixed. I have to say, I'm a bit underwhelmed at the response... I honestly expected more wailing and gnashing of teeth.
:(
lol
At least HGM took it the right way.
:)
Anyway, everything is back to normal.
;)
I'm still 200 posts short of where I was!!!!!!!!
Are you really?
lol
I did fix everything that I messed around with... *shrug*
Yeah, I am, heh.
Actually, oops, nevermind. I'm not. I was nearing 19,500 a few days ago. So it's right. I got confused.
Oops.
test
I've always aspired to be the Houston GM of the forums, but alas, no time to do it.:(
ZZzzzzz......huh....what did I miss? Oh....sorry I slept a few days and I find out I lost and re-gained posts......oh well......back to sleep.....ZZzzzz
I wouldn't get too attached to your post counts. We've always been fighting problems with vBulletin and we're probably going to have to switch internet service providers this year. It may cause post count "hiccups" or worse.
Clay
well then so be it...I guess I don't have an incentive to be active on this forum...anymore. I wonder how many people in BMO would feel....like all the times on the forums, how the forums was a fun place, where we would make fun of each other, play games (before there was a word or name game) top 10 reasons why stieny is an A$$ type of threads...you post 10 of those a night and you have 100 post easily. Those type of games stopped when stieny took the fun away....then ohms did the same thing...(but for his credit, he restored most of it) Post counts are a game itself...it is a record of what you do on this forum...it also tells people in BMO how active of a GM they are and such...ect. If you don't want people to be attached to post counts than why have them in the first place....also if you take them away now, it will piss people off... if you don't like the post games, then you don't have to be part of it. i know some people don't like post padders, doesn't mean he has to take the fun away but telling clay that post counts don't matter.... Because they do matter to some people...take a look at the king of post padders, (Michealg123) he would have more than 23k, and dabs would be at 25k if it wasn't for stieny....I would be at around 20k as well.
All 3 of us were 10 times more active in our heyday than ohms_law and HGM. I think that we averaged 50-200 post per day...and Micheal posted something like 1,000 post in 2 days that set a record...
Fixed.Quote:

:)
This actually goes directly to my point though. Does it tell how active the person is when many of those posts are from blatant post padding? Doing that dilutes the meaning of post counts, at least in my eyes.Quote:

That's kind of my point as well. That (at least a few) people do seem to pay an inordinate amount attention to them is kind of a problem.Quote:

Of course, I don't participate in padding. I did briefly, but was quickly bored by it.
Look though, I don't personally care if you or anyone else post pads. If it makes you happy, that's fine by me. I was just having a little fun at your expense is all, since I knew that you'd get kind of pissed about it. I didn't say a word about it to Clay or Dee or anyone at all until after I did it, when HGM PM'ed me laughing and asking how long I was going to keep the threads deleted. There's no real need to get defensive... If you want the "lead", go right ahead, that doesn't bother me in the least!
:)
Although vBulletin is made to handle 500,000+ posts like we have. It was never built to handle all the forums and threads we have. So it's been a constant fight to keep it stable without slowing down or losing posts. I'll feel bad if we have to trim some threads or even () split BMO and Sports Mogul into 2 forums. But it's better than having a forum that doesn't work. If that means you lose all incentive to be active, that's a bummer.
I know. I've seen bigger bulletin boards. But they don't have forums that are hooked into BMO. I'll make the best choice I can with the resources we have. I know post counts are important, but they aren't sacrosanct. In fact, with the time we spend umpiring fights about post counts and post padding, I sometimes wonder if we might be better off if there were no post counts at all.
 People fight about stuff on these forums?:rolleyes:
my kind of person, screwing with somebody just because you can.Quote:

Yeah, that's really my only "problem" with post-padding. I used to do it sometimes, but now the only thread I post on that really qualifies as "padding" is Word Assocation just because...I think it's a fun thing to do. But as both you and Bobby said, the practical use for post counts is to inform users how active of a poster you are, and generally, the more active posters are the more experienced ones on the forums. Post counts that are filled with meaningless padding posts don't get across that information, since it's a mix of "legitimate" and "illegitimate" posts.
On the other forum I often frequent (forums.mtgsalvation.com), they have strict spam rules (as I think is needed for a forum of such a huge magnitude), and they have separate forums for one-word type threads such as Word Association where posts are not counted towards your post count. Combine the strict spam rules and the fact that only forums with meaningful discussion add to post count, the post count on that site gives you meaningful information - how active AND productive the member truly is.
Of course, for a relatively small (in comparison) forum such as ours, I don't really care one way or the other if there are post counts, meaningful or otherwise.
Just some food for thought.
.....so basically jokes for the visually enhanced....us blind peons just get caught in the backwash.... :D:p:rolleyes::cool:
I'm cool with that....
lol <- for real. I chuckled a bit, at least.Quote:

I do like the whole idea of not counting posts in certain forums... and then putting all of the "post padding" threads there. That would at least get rid of the blatent post padding threads while still allowing for the game threads like word association, as HGM mentioned.
I really like the idea behind the changing post counts to titles. The whole count thing simply lends itself to abuse (which is a term I'm using very loosely, since there has always been acceptance of post padding here).
I'm probably opening a bigger can of worms here but, I personally would prefer it if the individual BMO league subforums were split off into a separate forum (Basically, the entire BMO: Leagues forum and it's subforums). Really, their already a separate space anyway, with their own rules and customs. Additionally, if that were to happen, then people's user names on the BMO forums could be made to match their user names on BMO itself (and forum registration there could also be enforced), which would help BMO users. The other BMO forums (general discussion, sugestions, bug reports, etc...) should stay here though.
Remember when I post padded in the "Top 30 Posters"-or whatever it was called-and one of you guys (Mods I mean) closed the thread becasue of it? :p
