Two straight over the vaunted Tigers, with a 3-hit shutout today. If not for Edgar Renteria, the Tigers would have been no-hit. WTF? lol

even a broke clock is right twice a day
I'm more interested in seeing how many games a team with an 18 million dollar payroll can win - ladies and gentlemen your 2008 Florida Marlins!
Seriously though, isn't there some regulation in baseball that says that an owner has the obligation to put out the most competitive team possible? It would be stretching it to say that Loria has done all he can to put a decent product on the field this year..
Granted I think the Tigers are majorly overrated this year.
Keep in mind Ordóñez, Renteria Polance and Gullien all posted well above avergae years and probably won't repeat them, Sheffield is coming off injury so who knows, Granderson will have to recover from a hand injury which may effect him all year (for an example see what happened to Coco Crisp in his 1st year in Boston).
As far as pitching .. After Verlander the rotation is questionable. Rogers is 43 and Coming off and injury, Willis is a major questionmark after last year and coming to the AL, Bonderman and Robinson are both pitchers with losing records who have yet to live up to the potential the supposedly have.
Zumaya and Rodney are injured in the Bullpen and Todd Jones continues to defy logic by succsefully closing games while thowing 60mph.
I think it all adds up to a team that will wind up about the same as last year (88-92 wins) and still be a disappointment.
I don't think Detroit is overrated (yet), I just think it's funny they've lost their first two to the Royals. Especially they way they were shut down today. They won't get shut out often.
Well no there isnt owners are free to be as greedy as they want, but whos to say the Marlins aren;t doing it right is some regard.
South Florida cannot support a major league team, and will never be able to support a payroll like the Mets or even the Braves or Phillies. Yet, since there inception in 1993 Only 1 team has won more Championships then they have, and only 1 has more NL pennants.
Well, I definitely think Florida needs to MOVE. Far away. Probably Tampa as well.
Why in the world couldn't Miami support a team? There are 4-5 million people in the area, It's one of the largest media markets in the US, and the large Hispanic community there does follow baseball.
Anyway, there are some clauses in the Major League Constitution that talk about fielding a competitive team. The interpretation of that is up to the Commissioner though, and I haven't heard that the Commissioner's office is making any noise about it to Loria or the Marlins. The league is actually helping him push the State, County, and local governments into building a new stadium for them.
In my opinion, they really do need a new stadium. The team should kick in a sizable chunk of cash to get it though, which Loria seems unwilling to do.
Ah well, the Marlins are the second team Loria is running into the ground.. *hears the faint call of the Expos from the city that's getting its third chance with a team*
So if the Nationals fail in Washington, under baseball logic is it three strikes it's out?? *lol*
That's the thing that really bothers me about what's going on with the Marlins. I just don't understand why the owners are allowing Loria to continue to own a baseball team. There are plenty of people, groups, and corporations that would be glad to purchase the team, even (especially?) if they were required to keep them in the Miami area.
From a canadian standpoint you would be hard pressed to find a single fan up here who doesn't have a foul and bitter taste in their mouth left behind by the departure of the expos and their evil owner. What bothers me most is that he baught the team and then sold it for a song to major league baseball, then baught another team and is running IT into the ground.
Exactly. I just don't understand why the owners are letting him do that.
Man, I love to see the Royals win a few good games like these. The Pirates, too, in that awesome late-inning game. I would love to see a Pirates/Reds NLCS and Royals in the ALCS. Just to get some different names in the 'above .500' crowd. Course, I'd still be rooting for the sox in the end...
I didn't even know Loria owned the Expos before. But man, they ship everyone off now - even Tampa Bay tries to retain Crawford, Baldelli, Kazmir and some others...they don't just send everyone packing as soon as they're arb-eligible. It must suck to be a Marlins fan.
Still, the Marlins do have two championships...but I think there was some actual payroll for the '03 run, right? Lowell and Beckett at least...
Didn't Charlie Finley try and sell off all of his players from the great A's dynasty because he didn't agree with free agency? And didn't the commisioner or somebody step in to stop him from doing it? I don't understand what the difference is between that and what Loria has done over the last 3 years in Florida..
I find it funny that the Marlins have won 2 championships since coming into the league in '93, and yet they don't have good crowds. I mean, they've had some great players come through their system. It's a pity that they can't keep some of the big time players, like Cabrera, Beckett, Willis, Lowell.
Hopefully they'll hang on to Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, and a few others.
But I'm a huge Astros fan, and they've won more Championships with a smaller pay roll than the Astros ever have, sooooooooo...can't complain there.
It's (basically) all in his Wikipedia article, if your interested: Charlie Finley
Loria Must GO.
Oh, and back on topic -- Royals complete the sweep and are currently baseball's only undefeated team. Ain't the early season fun?
