The mighty Billy Crystal has struck out
For those of you who thought Billy Crystal's run with the Yankees was going to spell the end of baseball as we know it, I have a question for you.
That wasn't so bad, was it?
Actually, watching Crystal was a lot of fun on an otherwise routine Thursday. Crystal didn't have to wait long get his fantasy on and then get out of the way for the real ballplayers. The soon-to-be-60-year-old comedian led off the bottom of the first inning as the team's designated hitter (not "designated Hebrew," as Crystal himself suggested on Wednesday) and worked the count to 3-1 before striking out against Pittsburgh lefty Paul Maholm. You can find the pitch-by-pitch here.
Yet despite the knockout, Crystal can walk into his next film shoot with a couple of things to brag about. For one, he fouled off the second pitch down the first base line. For another, he made guys like me now wonder if we could do the same thing. Yeah, that's jealousy talking. Anyone else feeling a little green after watching him take a few hacks?
Anyway, Crystalmania is over almost as soon as it began.
And whaddya know? The sport still stands.
Video clip after the jump ... Also, check out this clip shot from the stands at Legends Field.

Re: The mighty Billy Crystal has struck out
That was a pretty good at bat actually! Don't the Giants need offense badly? Sign him up!
Re: The mighty Billy Crystal has struck out
yea, he did pretty darn well... the only thing though is that Maholm obviously layed up his pitches to Crystol. At least to me, it appeared that way.
No one is going to lay into Billy Crystol in a spring training game when he's on a publicity at bat anyway. I mean comeon... can you just imagine what would have happened if he were nailed by a real fastball?!?
Billy Cristol himself did quite well though. Nothing at all to complain about regarding that at bat.

hey if it were Gibson on that mound he would have buzzed him lol or clemans even then threw a bat at him!
Re: The mighty Billy Crystal has struck out
Sheffield would have just punched him
He wouldn't even need to be at bat - in the stands is fine
