It's tough. Both are injury-prone. Glaus has still produced on offense, though, and Rolen on defense. I really can't decide at this point. If Rolen could at least give you average offensive production, I'd take him over Glaus...but if not, I'd take Glaus.
I like Rolen for his defense and i think he still has the ability to produce with the bat. Plus in this case he is cheaper which is a big plus for a team like the Jays.
From a Blue Jays perspective, I'd rather have Rolen. They have a groundball pitching staff and a solid offense even without Glaus, so the imrpoved defense would benefit them greatly.
Speaking strictly on a Glaus vs. Rolen basis though, without taking into accoutn the rest of the team makeup, it's a toss-up to me.
I agree; it's basically a wash just looking at the 2 players. I wouldn't be in a huge hurry to have either of them on my team, really. Both are good players when healthy, but you can't count on either of them to stay healthy.
Well actually no he is not - Rolen is owed 33 million (over 3 years) whereas Glaus is owed 24 million (over 2).Glaus has way more power but as said the defence of Rolen is superior. However that extra year of guaranteed money is.
IMO, I would be worrying (as a GM) due to their health issues.Personally, seeing that Rolen is "person non grata" in St Louis,I am surprised that the Jays could NOT get an extra body from the Cardinals ( not a top flight prospect but a middle level one) to cover the cost & to ensure the deal.
MLB.com has an Article on it too
Well the deal is done & apparently St Louis only did it if Glaus accepted to trigger his option so basically a "wash" financially - looks like St Louis wanted a power bat rather than a defensive 3B who had issues (again) with his manager.
From Toronto's point of view I honestly cant see the reasoning. They already were ill equipped in the power department (compared to Boston & the Yankees) & just got worse,Rolen although an upgrade defensively is an injury about to happen & they are stuck with him for 3 years & he still has a full no trade deal.Weird choice from J.P. (unless they really felt that Glaus was about to regress big time but even then they could have got a cheaper alternative like Inge,Ensberg or even *shudder* Feliz)
why wasnt there a 3rd choice for neither of them so i could vote?
Because we are talking about this trade...so if you were making the trade, which side do you think got the better deal
if i had to choose, id say the cards got the better deal, as they have glaus for just 2 seasons, whereas the jays are saddled with rolen for 3
A healthy Rolen is a better overall 3B. His defense makes the difference as the hitting for each is about the same.
but whens that?Quote:
A healthy Rolen
The team who got the player who stays the most healthy will win the deal.
It's another deal that doesn't really seem to have improved Toronto, but gives Ricciardi another boatload of excuses for another season of mediocre play. "I, basically being a self proclaimed genius, have once more done everything I can to improve the team." Seriously, the guy's act is wearing thin. Can you say overrated?
