Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Can They Beat Pete Rose?
Well it's that time again fellas...we just finished the "Can He Beat Cy Young" experiment, another fellas is working on the Hank Aaron one, and now it is the Pete Rose test.
We are going to take a list of players, starting in their rookie year, and play through their careers to see if they can beat the all time hits record. I'm going to take suggestions on players to use and I, of course, will make my own suggestions as well. So with that said, here are the ground rules for the sims.
1. I will GM the team, auto sort will handle the lineup and pitching rotations, except for the player in question.
2. The player will be placed in the lead off spot no matter what his ratings to ensure maximum at bats and chances to get hits.
3. The player will remain on the same team for his entire career.
4. League settings and options will remain as default.
5. No trades will be offered nor will they be accepted.
6. Player will be resigned at contract renewal to a max 7 year deal at the rate at which they request.
7. Finances will be managed by me to provide largest profit available.
8. One free agent signing every year will be permitted to ensure competitiveness of the team as a whole.
CHALLENGERS (make your suggestions and I will edit this post)

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Tony Gwynn definitely, and maybe Stan Musial?

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Ichiro Suzuki, Joe Mauer, and Robinson Cano

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Don't forget Carl Crawford; he's already got 900+ hits and he's only 25, he'll have a thousand before he turns 26 so as long as he stays healthy he's got the best shot out of current players.
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Also, what about Yastrzemski?
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Wade Boggs and Don Mattingly are good ones here too...

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Tony Gwynn is only 73/83 in your run? thats too bad :(

Keep in mind that scouting is different for each team that you start with, I believe SD was +-7 so he could be a lot better than that.

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Okay guys, I just got to number 15 so I think I am going to close down suggestions for players at this point. You can still make them, just know that I might not get around to them. If this thing is that popular I will keep it going though.
So show me some support and it could go on forever :)

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Matt Holliday or Garrett Atkins
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Out of those two, I'd say Holliday definitely, but I don't Atkins would have much of a chance.
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
I have a question, do you put a lot of money into medical staff? Obviously this is important, because an injury is usually what forces these players to retire...
And for a suggestion (if you choose to keep going and going), Kirby Puckett!
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Yep, I spend a ton of money in medical.
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Derek Jeter, he has a shot in real life.

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Ichiro is going to destroy the record....he'll get 5000...write it down.

Who is gonna start collecting the money and working the odds for us? I want to know who I should put my five spot on :)
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
I'd put Most of my money on Ted Williams, and the rest on Ichiro.
Joe Mauer Doesn't stand a chance, catchers don't last long enough.
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
couple names for later if you do more
Delmon Young and Hank Aaron
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Arod is having a heck of a career right now. He might break the home run record as well :)
I'm hoping to get his up later tonight.

Alex Rodriguez
The year was 1994 and Alex Rodriguez, affectionately known as Arod, was about to make his major league debut. The hype had been incredible as this 5 tool player was making his way from high school and going straight to the big show.
Arod did not dissappoint;
Career Highlights
1994 Rookie Of The Year
13 All Star Games
2 Gold Gloves
25 Career Grand Slams
13 World Championships
Alex may have played for too long, but who in their right mind is going to turn down over 9 million dollars a year to play for a ball club that is in the playoffs every year. Arod is a shoe in for the hall of fame, and he broke a few records along the way as well.
2945 Runs Scored
822 Doubles
62 Triples
831 Home Runs
2605 Runs Batted In
4093 Hits

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Wow, just goes to show you that you can hit .274 for your career over 25 seasons and still come up short of Pete Rose. That is a pretty impressive record. I'm not sure if any of these guys is going to break it. ARod seemed to walk too much which cut down on his chances for hits.
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Wow, so close. He had an awesome rookie year. It looks like he peaked at age 26, and went downhill pretty fast after he got to age 31. If he had stayed in his prime until 35, I hate to think of the numbers he'd have put up.
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Yep, his health rating went down quick after about 30 and his other ratings followed. Eventually he got moved to DH because he couldn't field very well and then I just kept him in the lineup until he retired.
2014 was an interesting year to me. Out of nowhere he became a respectable hitter again after I had thought he was sure going to be a .200 guy until he retired. Nice to see he had one last good season in there :)

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Ty Cobb
The man was affectionately known as the "Georgia Peach", but his play was far from sweet. It was hard nosed and raw. Ty had so much talent that most scouts couldn't even begin to put it into words. He began his career in the year of 1905 with the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers were quickly one of the elite teams in the American League and it didn't take Cobb long to make his impact on the team and the league as a whole. Cobb won both the ROY and the MVP in 1905 when he played in 152 games and compiled a .399 batting average. It was the closest that he would ever come to hitting .400 but the fact that he never reached that plateau didn't seem to bother anyone, including himself.
Career Highlights
Rookie Of The Year (1905)
27 All Star Games
16 MVP Awards
9 Gold Gloves
14 Career Grand Slams
25 World Championships
Multiple Time Batting Champ
Multiple Time HR Leader
Multiple Time RBI Leader
Injury History
1915 - Wrist Stress Fracture (2 weeks)
1921 - Broken Cheekbone (2 weeks)
1924 - Broken Hip (9 months)
1926 - Separated Shoulder (3 weeks)
Cobb played at a high level for the better part of 26 seasons. He fell off in his last season when he failed to hit above .200 for the first time in his career at any level. In fact Cobb managed to hit over .300 in 22 of his 27 seasons. He hit better than .350 in 10 years with his highest average coming in 1905 when he hit .399. Ty managed to hit 481 home runs from the lead off spot, something that was and still is unheard of in this game. While he wasn't the best base stealer in the world, he knew how to get on base and he knew how to score once he got there. In his career Cobb scored over 3900 runs. The man ended up with more career triples than most will have home runs. Ty Cobb lifted the city of Detroit and the Tigers on to his shoulders and carried them in to greatness. They will go down as the best team to have ever played professional baseball and have sustained the most impressive dynasty in the history of any sport. Cobb won 25 World Titles, including 20 in a row from 1906 - 1925. There is no doubt that Cobb was the greatest hitter of his time and will retain that title for quite some time, possibly forever.

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Stan "The Man" Musial
Stan came up in the spring of 1939 as a RF but because of team needs Stan was moved to CF for the 1940 season and spent the rest of his career in that spot until he retired at the age of 43 after the 1964 season. Stan was the leader of the St. Louis Cardinals team for the entire 25 years that he was a part of the team. He was the leading hitter, run scorer and many other things on a team that needed that lift when he first showed up. Stan lead the Cardinals to multiple world titles and gained his spot in Cooperstown and the hearts of baseball fans everywhere.
Stan lead the Cardinals to 21 World Titles, including streaks of 6 (1939-1944), 3 (1946-1948), and 12 (1950-1961).
Career Highlights
Rookie Of The Year (1939)
25 All Star Games
19 MVP Awards
14 Gold Gloves
47 Career Grand Slams
21 World Championships
2 Triple Crowns (1952, 1953)
2 World Series MVP Awards
Best Season
1952: .388 BA, 47 HR, 149 RBI, 164 BB, .765 Slg, .522 OBP, 1.287 OPS
Injury History
1956 - Broken Back Vertabra (6 months)
1962 - Ankle Stress Fracture (2 weeks)
1964 - Ruptured Cervical Disc (3 months)
1964 - Wrist Stress Fracture (3 weeks)
Stan put together probably the greatest career that any man will ever have. He finished with over 900 career home runs, 3000 RBI and a career average of .323. He failed to hit .300 only twice in 26 years and was always the most valuable man that the Cardinals had on the roster. His heart and determination were something that all fans looked up to and they believed that Stan "The Man" could do anything. In September of 1956 Stan suffered what many thought would be a career ending injury. With rehab and plain old guts, Stan was able to come back from a broken back vertebra in time for the start of the 1957 season. He didn't just show up either, he won the NL MVP Award. Words cannot describe the value of his heart determination and skill, but stats may show some light in to how much he had to do with the success of the franchise as a whole.

Wow! 19 MVP Awards? That's impressive. The most one of my players has ever had was 8 and that was Andy Marte.

Cal Ripken, Jr.
Cal started his major league career in 1980 and had an impressive first season. He however, did not win the ROY award. Cal played for 21 seasons and just about all of them were played at a very high level.
What is interesting is that even with the numbers that Cal put up, he never won an MVP award. He was able to take home two world championships in his 21 years, winning back to back titles in 1987 and 1988.
Numbers of Interest
627 Home Runs
2054 Runs Batted In
2329 Career Runs Scored
3699 Career Hits
While Cal's career certainly was an impressive one, he was not able to come away with the all time hits record.

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Rickey Henderson
Rickey began his career in the year of 1978 for the Oakland Athletics. He was as fast as lightning and had the potential to become the ultimate 5 tool player. Oakland was in dire need of a star and Rickey was poised and ready to give them that player they needed.
Many will say that he played too long, that he should have given up baseball long before he did, and those people would be right. Henderson's last productive year was 1991 when he was age 32. No one is really sure what caused this man 's talents to diminish at such at early age, but they sure did. It was like he hit a brick wall and just forgot how to hit all of the sudden. Most die hard fans will tell you it is because he came up at the age of 19 and played so hard that his body had nothing left by the time he reached his 30's. At age 31 he had already been in the league for 12 years.
Rickey was not able to beat Pete Rose's all time hits record, but he was an outstanding player to say the least.
Major Accomplishments:
9 All Star Games
3 MVP Awards (1983, 1984, 1986)
11 Career Grand Slams
3058 Career Hits
466 Career Home Runs
815 Career Stolen Bases
2 World Series Championships (1981, 1985)

Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
Wow, you're back after a yearlong hiatus! That must be some sorta record...
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
You really should have played everyone in an equalized stadium and era to be totally fair.
-
Re: Can He Beat Pete Rose?
The whole thing is that it isn't about being totally fair. I'm doing this just to see how the different guy's career looks through the eyes of Mogul. You get to see the players play a lot longer normally because you just keep signing them. Some of them never play up to their real life counterpart and some of them play way over their heads. Just look at Rickey for instance. He hit a ton more home runs then he would have ever dreamed to hit in real life.

Joe DiMaggio
Joe was, well, THE MAN to say the least. The Yankee Clipper came up at the age of 18 and burst on to the scene. He was a vital part of the Yankees organization and helped them win many pennants during his years there. He was durable and dependable and was the most consistent player of his time. Joe played with greats like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Pee Wee Reese and many others while he worked his way in to the record books and the hall of fame.
Joe put up some spectacluar numbers and never asked for anything from the people of New York or the Yankees themselves. He played his entire career for New York and he certainly made the most of it. He will go down in history as one of the most talented players to have ever played the game.
Major Accomplishments:
18 All Star Games

Tony Gwynn
Tony wasn't the type of player often thought of as a superstar in his days with the Padres. He never asked for the big money, he never hit a lot of home runs and he wasn't flamboyant and full of himself. He was, however, an outstanding hitter that played at an incredibly high level for many many years.
Tony never won an MVP award, although you could have made an argument for a few years, and he was never fortunate enough to play on a world championship team. He did get his chance to go to the World Series twice in his career.
Tony was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2009 and received an astounding 93% of the vote.
Major Accomplishments:
7 All Star Games

13 Career Grand Slams
2 NL Batting Titles
2564 Runs Scored

Ted Williams
1937 Was the year that the Ted Williams ERA began in Boston. Ted burst on to the scene impressing just about anyone that saw him play. In 1937 Ted won the rookie of the year award by posting one of the better rookie seasons by any player up until that point. "The Kid" as he was known to most Boston fans, never let up through his entire career. He played with the intensity that no other player could match.
Williams was one of those rare hitters that could hit for both high average and massive power. Twice in his career he hit over 70 home runs in a season. In twenty seasons he failed to hit 20 home runs in just one, his last season, which was cut short due to injury.
Major Accomplishments:
Rookie Of The Year (1937)
18 All Star Games
9 MVP Awards (6 straight 1940-1945)
6 Gold Gloves
3 Triple Crowns (1944, 1947, 1948)

8 World Championships
856 Career Home Runs

I'm not quite sure what is up with that. I have seen some other people post about that issue, but I'm not quite sure what causes it.
