2007 Mariners

Well first off I just want to say that I hope HoustonGM won't mind me using the format he used on his dynasty. I really enjoyed reading his so I thought I would do the same so everyone else might enjoy it. If you do end up reading this and want me to change it Houston just PM me and I'll come up with my own format.

To start off I'll be using HoustonGM's roster (uptodate) along with the reccomended settings in the readme file. AI and Financing difficulty are at Mogul while PBP is at coach. I won't be doing PBP mode on anything EXCEPT division rivalries or otherwise noted (this due to the fact I have my own 2000 Cubs dynasty I have for exclusive PBP mode which is now in 2004 and I've already put in too much time and effort in to that one).

Starting this season I have hopes that I can at least win the AL West as it's probably the weakest division IMO, but then again the Mariners aren't a strong team either.

After the horrendous Horacio Ramirez trade, I'm left with 2 rookies in the bullpen and a somewhat shaky rotation. I'll be looking to upgrade my farm system pretty fast since the farm system we currently have is somewhat lackluster.

I pretty much will keep the pitching the same but the lineup got changed up a bit.

The lineup looks pretty well rounded, although I would love to upgrade Vidro and Guillen during the season. I'll let them start out to see how well they do. Pitching-wise the end of the rotation looks like it'll need some upgrading sooner than later. Hopefully everyone can hold on to at least a sub 4 ERA.

April 5 - NYY Robinson Cano (2B) has a dislocated hip after trying to make a double play and will be out 5 weeks

Post Series Thoughts : Well I started off 3-0 against division rivals, but then again the Angels have a lackluster offensive and they scored pretty well against my SP (other than Hernandez of course). Even the 9-3 win was pretty close as they still had 9 hits that game. 8 of them coming in 6 innings. I'm very happy with the offensive production though, everyone except Sexson anyways, but he's always been a slow starter so I'll just give him some time to heat up before I make any drastic moves. Everyone ended up with at least one run and everyone except 2 guys (Richie Sexson and Jose Vidro) have at least 1 RBI, Jose Guillen having 7 of them (mainly from his grand slam and then the homer the next day).

Pre-Series Thoughts: This series is a road trip to the twins before having a 3 game home series against the Angels again. Nothing much to say this early in to the season. Too bad there is no Santana Vs Hernandez pitchers duel :(

INJURY: Sean White (RP) is injured for 4 days with a spiked foot, nobody will be called up to replace him as it is a short injury. The bullpen should be able to hold out until he's back.

Game Notes: Just as I was expecting Horacio Ramirez was horrible. He gave up 4 runs in the third after recording 2 outs by giving up 2 hits and then 2 walks and a bases clearing triple before I had to bring in Reitsma. The bullpen pitched great until the 9th inning when they scored 5 runs. Mateo gave up some hits with 1 out to go then Sean White gave up 2 runs and let Mateo's runners score without recording an out forcing me to bring in Putz to end the pain and get the final out.

Game Notes: The game may seem like a blowout, but to be honest it was pretty close. We had 15 hits while they had 14 and we both had 1 error. Hernandez got lucky by somewhat scattering his 11 hits while everytime people were on base for me someone was doubling or hitting a homer. Hopefully this won't be a trend for Felix.

Around the League
April 8th - COL Todd Helton (1B) hit his 1000th RBI today.
April 9th - TOR Roy Halladay (SP) suffered an ankle stress fracture while performing warmups before a game and will miss 3 weeks.
April 10th - NYY Andy Pettitte (SP) has a broken jaw after getting in to a fight with a fellow teammate in the locker room after a game and will miss 4 weeks.

Post Series Thoughts : Winning 2/3 of these games was the best I had hoped for with a bad matchup of Santana vs Ramirez so I'd say the series went pretty well. Almost everyone upped their BA by a few points with Richie Sexson going up from .140 to .308 and 2 HR. Adrian finished the series strong and hopefully it will continue on in to the next series against the Angels at Safeco.

April 17 - MIN Jesse Crain has a broken neck vertebra and will miss four months. Bummer for the Twins bullpen as Jesse Crain was a pretty solid reliever.

INJURY: Jose Lopez suffered a stretched knee ligament while running the bathpaths and will be out for 1 month. Until then I'll probably move Willie Bloomquist in to second and call up Mike Morse to split time with Yunie as he's hitting 323 with a .863 OPS in AAA.

Game Notes: The game was close, Miguel Batista got in trouble in the 7th with 1 out and men on the corners when I brought in CHris Reitsma who got Hank Blalock to ground to short but they couldn't pull the double. The Mariners then scored in the 9th and 10th off closer Eric Gagne and Ron Mahay.

Post Series Thoughts: Well I'm off to Cleveland now, but these 2 games were great as they put me even farther up in the AL West. My starting pitching has been pretty good except Horacio Ramirez, which I'm not surprised by. If he can't give me a strong outing next game I'll look in to bringing up a minor leaguer or getting a good trade.

note: rest day for a few starters, hopefully Felix can pitch well enough.

Key Performances:
Mariners Felix Hernandez - 6IP, 7H, 2BB, 6K -note: it was nice to see the strikeouts high and the walks low, but it took him 120 pitches and he led off every single inning with a single. The Indians hit in to 5 DP's on the night though.
Indians C.C. Sabathia - 6IP, 5H, 4BB, 4R, 6K
Indians Casey Blake - 3-3, 1BB

NOTE: Well even though it seems like Felix is pitching pretty well with a 3-0 record and 1.78 ERA in 25.1IP, its weird that even with his 16K:15BB he has a BAA of .283 which is too high for him. On the bright side he hasn't given up a homerun yet this year. one of 2 things will probably happen and that is he'll continue to give up too many hits and his ERA will rise or his BAA will slowly go down. The high K:BB ratio last game was a positive sign so I can only hope for the best. On another pitcher related note, it seems Jarrod Washburn and Miguel Batista are doing well and are making great 2 and 3 starters.

April 20 - DET Marcus Thames (LF) has a torn ankle ligament after landing akwardly on a step chasing down a linedrive. He will miss five months. Craig Monroe will take over at LF for him.
April 21 - BAL Ramon Hernandez (C) has a sprained lower back and will be out for 3 weeks.

Well I'm off to visit the Athletics for a quick 3 game series then take a day off and play Toronto back at home for a 3 game series.

April Review

April is over and now it's time to write up my thoughts on the month and post some stats that I know you all love :P . Well after playing in coach mode for PBP and then switching over to Manager mode with a Mogul financing difficulty always enabled, I haven't found any difference in PBP. So far I have mixed feelings on my lineup. Everyone seems to get hits when I really need them or in huge blowouts, but in every other game nobody hits anything, only 4 players have batting averages around .300 that are regular starters. The bullpen has done well, I just need to upgrade Brandon Morrow and Sean White as they still need some more time in the minors and the Rotation has done well. Hopefully Cha Seung Baek can pitch as well as he did in his first start. Everything looks good so far though and I don't have a lot to complain about or get worried about so with that let the stat feast begin.

Note: Well Seung Baek has started off this year sparkling, but there are some concerns with him. He has a 1.98 ERA but has given up a homerun in each of his starts. He only has 4 K's and 5 walks and his DICE sits at 5.41. Luckily right now he's getting a 41.4% GB rate but with 62 movement, 72 control and 65 power (+/- 7) he probably won't be able to keep it their long. If he can keep it their until July when I start looking for pitching that would be great. On the other side of the coin, Yuniesky Betancourt only has a .200 OBA and a .178 BA while hitting 2 dingers already this year in some rare power. Yunie should be an average defensive shortstop, with ~280-290 BA and average speed. So far this year though he has pretty much done nothing in 90AB and has even commited quite a bit of errors. The good thing is that his K ratio is at the same rate as last year (1K per ~10-11AB) which might signify he's just in a slump right now and looking to come out soon.

Game Notes: After this game I went to check difficulty just to make sure if it was on manager and it was. So anyways, Vicente Padilla had only given up 2 hits the whole game. Top of the 9th comes up and Raul lines out to start it, then with 1 out the most amazing thing happens, everyone starts getting hits. They then bring in Otsuka (sorry HoustonGM) to try and keep them still in the game as its now 3-2 in my favor and he gives up a homerun on the third pitch to Yunie. Wow, great 9th inning come back :)

Notes: Well it looks like they got me back in this one as Kameron Loe was pretty much unhittable all game scattering all 3 of his hits over 8 innings. No worries though as Kenji got a day off and will likely get the next day off as well before coming back. Kenji is hitting .349 with 3HR (2 of which came after hitting 3rd rather than 5th) and sits on 19 RBI's in 26 games this year. Sadly he gives up 1SB every 2 games and only has a 21%CS. As long as he keeps producing with a bat though he'll continue to play regularly with defensive subs every now and again.

Around the League
May 1 - MIN Joe Mauer (C) will miss five months and basically the rest of the season with a torn achilles tendon. Mike Redmond will take over catching for the Twins.
May 2 - NYY Hideki Matsui (LF) is out for the rest of the season and partially part of the next season (14 months) with a torn rotator cuff. The Yankees wouldn't comment on how he tore it. Sad news for Yankee fans but Melky Cabrera will now see regular playing time in left field.
May 2 - STL Preston Wilson (RF) will miss the rest of the season with a broken wrist after landing on his hand while trying to make a play in the outfield. Juan Encarnacion will take over RF after not having played a game thus far.
May 3 - On the brighter side, Omar Vizquel, the former Mariners shortstop, got his 2,500th hit today.
May 4 - After a great start it seems Julio Lugo will miss two months with a ruptured cervical disc. Lugo was batting .358/.412/.593 in 123 AB. Alex Cora will take over at SS after filling in defensively for 2B/SS to begin the year.

I swear I had the bases loaded in 3 different innings with no outs and I managed to only gain 1 run each time. This seems to be a trend in all the games I play where I can fill the bases up with no outs but nothing ever comes out of it.

Note: Tomorrow being a day off that means Vidro will come back from his bruised kidney which means that Adam Jones will be sent back down to AAA to perfect his batting a bit more. All in all he hit .353 in 5 games even though he didnt have a hit in 3 of them. Sean Burroughs will get the call up this time instead of Jeremy Reed to fill the bench. I'll let him play in AAA till he posts some positive numbers and use him to play part time RF and LF when Guillen and Ibanez need breaks. Till then Jason Ellison will take bats for them. On another note Miguel Batista's ERA has ballooned to 6.00 and Jarrod Washburn to 5.00. In Jarrod's defense he started on short rest, so it's to be expected, but Batista doesn't have a reason it should balloon that high. All I can say is that this was pretty much expected of him. His DICE is at 4.8 so hopefully it will come down soon, if not I always have 3 prospect catchers, a backup catcher and Kenji Johjima...I do NOT need that many catchers if you catch my drift. Chris Reitsma continues to dominate batters with a .167 BAA and 0.31 ERA in 28.2IP it looks like he'll take over setup duty for Sherill, the lefty specialist. Julio Mateo will move up to the long relief role and Sean White will take over as middle relief. A quick checkup on Horacio Ramirez reveals that he has a somewhat respectable 3.46 ERA in the minors with 2 starts and an amazing 2.54 DICE in hitter friendly AAA, upon further inspection though it seems hes given up 16 hits in 13IP giving him a grand total of .291 BAA.

May 13 - CLE Brian Sikorski (RP) retired at the age of 32 after posting a sub 4 ERA in 17 appearances this year.
May 13 - Gil Meche (KCR, SP) was traded to the Yankees for prospect Jeff Marquez (NYY, SP). This trade doesn't make a whole lot of sense to meve even if Meche is a rated 86 overall (+/- 7). He has posted a hideos 9.30 ERA so far this season in 8 games and has a 1-3 record , .331 BAA. He'll be the 4th starter for the Yankees while Marquez reports to A.
May 14 - SDP Trevor Hoffman has reported some stress in his wrist and will be put on the 15 day DL to be safe. Scott Linebrink will be the new closer.
May 14 - Ty Wigginton (WSN, 1B) will be traded once again and heads to the Yankees for Ross Ohlendorf (NYY, SP). Ross, a 24 y/o pitcher, looks to be a decent middle of the rotation pitcher. Ty Wigginton will take over 1B and Jason Giambi will move in to the DH role.
May 15 - CHC Kerry Wood (SP) has a dislocated shoulder and will be out for 3 weeks. Look for this to be just the beginning of a string of shoulder injuries for Wood.
May 15 - CHC Tomas Perez (2B) was released today and heads to independent leagues.
May 15 - Aaron Harang (CIN, SP) was traded to the Yankees today for Chase Wright (NYY, SP) , J. Brent Cox (NYY, RP) , and Tyler Clippard (NYY, SP). All seem to be great talents that are just a year or 2 away from the majors. Aaron Harang takes over as the Yankees ace. It will be interesting to see what will happen to the Yankees pitching and batting come the end of the year and offseason. With Roger Clemens and Mike Mussina 15 and 10 days away it looks as though Gil Meche, Chien-Ming Wang and Carl Pavano will fight for the 5th spot in the rotation. Kel Igawa meanwhile is filling in as a short reliever and will probably also be in the midst of the fight for the rotation spot. On the batting side of things, With Hideki Matsui out for the whole year and part of next year it looks like Melky Cabrera will get lots of time to develop and get a lot of playing time, by the time he comes back I'm not sure they'll need him unless they put him in the DH slot but then they have to decide who to use at first between Ty Wigginton and Jason Giambi. Either way the Yankees have quite the dilemma on their hands. If they do end up using Ty Wigginton off the bench I'll be surprised. He's mediocre defensively and has a great bat, but filling in from the bench already are Josh Phelps and Doug Mientkewicz.

Game Notes - I'm kind of sad about this game. It was really close and Batista pitched great. It was 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th in my favor but Putz blew his first save of the season by giving up a homerun to the first batter he faced.

INJURY: BIIIIIIIIG INJURY, Kenji Johjima has a broken wrist and will be out for SIX MONTHS, aka the rest of the season. Johjima was on a torrid start this year batting 5th and being moved up to 3rd partway through the season (as of now). He had a .355avg/.378obp/.478slg/.856ops. Only 3 HR so far , but the 355 avg was great. Jamie Burke will take over for Johjima. Rob Johnson will be called up from AA to take a bench spot and Yuniesky Betancourt will be batting Johjima's usual 3rd spot to see if maybe it'll jumpstart something as he's playing a lot worse than he should.

Mariners Jeff Weaver - 8.1IP, 5H, 2BB, 1HR, 3R, 3K -note: was 2 hit ball till the 8th when he gave up a HR and then a run and some hits in the 9th, Reitsma let the last run score.

INJURY: Minor injury, but to a big star. Ichiro will be out for 2 days with a bruised rib, Jason Ellison will take his place in CF.

Game Notes: Man..the game score was 3-5 in the top of the 9th, Mariners manage to get 2 in the top of the 9th and tie it up 5-5. Bottom of the 9th now, Morrow walks a batter and hits the next batter, Putz comes in and gets a popup and a groundball that can't be turned for a double play, next batter singles in to the OF scoring two and winning the game. *sigh*

May 17 - CHC Les Walrond (RP) retired at the age of 30.
May 18 - COL Brian Fuentes (RP) has a finger stress fracture and will be out for two weeks. Ramon Ramirez will take over close duty.
May 18 - MIL Craig Counsell (3B) sprained his ankle during pregame warmups and is out for two weeks. Although starting 35 games this year, Counsell only had a .178 BA with a .248 OBP to go with it and no homeruns in 118AB. Tony Graffanino will take over at third. Graffanino is an upgrade anyways, playing in 31 games this year he has posted a .290 avg in 80 AB.

Pre-series thoughts : ah, some interleague play, after playing my cubs dynasty for quite some time I'm pretty familiar with having the pitcher bat for me so this will be no problem for me. The giants are on the top of their division and it'll be a chance to see Bonds up close. Bonds by the way has 9 homeruns this year with a .275 avg and 46 walks to 16 strikeouts. He sits at 743 career homeruns.

May 21 - CHC Derrek Lee (1B) broke his wrist after getting hit in the hand by a pitch during a game. Lee had been off to a slow start this season with a .268, although he did have 10HR in 149 AB. Lee will be out for the season (seven months). Daryle Ward will take over 1B.
May 21 - DET Magglio Ordonez (RF) has a ruptured cervical disk and will be out for three months. Gary Sheiffeld will move over to RF from the DH and Ryan Raburn will be the new DH.
May 21 - NYY Jorge Posada (C) broke his hip while catching for an extended period of time, he will be injured for four months.
