It was a busy All-Star break with regards to trade activity. First, Philadelphia sends SS Chris Speier and P Gary Wagner to the Montreal Expos in exchange for CF Elliott Maddox, P Kyle Becker, P Donny Dochart, 3B Pat Scanlon, P Larry Landreth, P Rick Kreuger and 2B Earl Agus. Edge Montreal here as all the "Talent" sent to Philly is well below average.

Chicago (NL) sends P Larry Gura
Gotta give the edge to SF now as Gura is a talented 25 year old, but Rauch could end up being the better talent in the long run.
Texas sends P Dave Campbell
Cincinnati sends OF Al Oliver
Edge Texas here as Oliver moves right into the lineup and Campbell is a couple years away.
St. Louis sends C Jeremy Reybok, CF Larry Harlow, 3B Jerry Maddox
Kansas City sends C Ellie Rodriguez
Good move here by the Cardinals, sending 3 "C" level prospects for a capable starting catcher.
(Editors Note: It's been a while since the last update, so it may take me a bit to get back into the swing of things, but hopefully I can keep this going until '08.

MLB Trade News:
California sends P Ralph Bolling, CF Paul Schilling, 2B Hugh Yancey
Chicago (NL) sends 1B Bob Chance
Edge Chicago as Chance is aging and they get 3 viable minor leaguers for him.
The big trade however included the Sox as they send 4 minor leaguers, P Dick Ruthven, 1B Jeff Burroughs, LF Ben Ogilvie, and P Bert Blyleven to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for P Fergie Jenkins. Jenkins was 7-10 with a 3.89 ERA this year, and is 111-79 with a 3.00 for his career. Jenkins also has almost a 5/1 (1533/369) K/BB ratio for his career. Going to Chicago are 4 prospects, including Ruthven who was 11-4 3.54 this year and 11-3 3.41 last year, and Burroughs who has hit 23 HR's thusfar. It was a steep price to give up, but we needed an ace, and Jenkins who is signed through 1977, fits the mold.
Up next for the Sox is 6 games at home against the Baltimore Orioles.

Re: Impossible Dream???
End of the Year Minor League Report-
This is going to be a quick recap of the top minor leaguers in our system and the years they had.
George Brett 85/96 (AAA)-.369 15-89 1.010 OPS 57/35 BB/K 89 R
Brett is expected to force the Sox to find a new home for Rico Petrocelli next year as he becomes the team's starting 3B.
Gorman Thomas 83/96 (AAA)-.236 9-27 .875 OPS 32/25 BB/K
(AA)- .294 21-74 .980 OPS 80/52 BB/K
Thomas hits like a truck, but as evidenced by his .236 this year in AAA, the question is whether he will hit for a high enough average to be an everyday player. He's still got a ways to go.
Ernie Whitt 66/89 (A)- .294 19-79 .897 OPS 75/44 BB/K 75 R
Whitt has at least 3 years before he makes an impact in the majors, but he is being groomed to replace Ted Simmons if Simmons leaves via FA when his contract expires after '74.
Ray Knight 64/93 (A)- .327 13-74 .896 OPS 83 R
Knight could be the starting 1B for the Sox in 2-3 years, he could also end up being a valuable utility type, like Billy Grabarkewitz.
Willie Aikens 60/91 (R)- .346 4-19 1.034 OPS 31/12 BB/K
Aikens has great power and a great eye, he just needs time in the minors before he is a force for the big club.
UL Washington 57/88 (R)- .330 2-37 .857 OPS 10 steals 45 runs
Could be Sox starting SS when Petrocelli is gone.
Rich Gossage 77/79 (AAA) 11-6 2.53 121.0 IP 11 saves 80/49 K/BB
Will end up either as the closer once Sparky Lyle is gone or a set up man for someone else
Dan Quisenberry 69/83 (A) 6-2 2.02 111.1 IP 13 saves 30/16 K/BB
Doesn't strike anyone out, which could hurt him, but his upside is a dominant groundball closer type.
Mike Flanagan 70/89 (A) 13-4 2.59 163.1 IP 75/53 K/BB
Expected to be a number 2 or 3 starter in a couple of years.
As you can see, its fairly slim pickings beyond the offense and the top couple of pitchers, we'll have to see what we can do about that with all of our young hitting talent in the offseason.

Around the MLB:
I just realized that we are in the midst of one of the greatest offensive seasons of all-time and I haven't talked about it. 26 year old 3B Darrell Evans of the Atlanta Braves in on pace to destroy Roger Maris record of 61 homeruns in a season. Evans is currently hitting .335 57-141. On top of those gaudy numbers, he has also walked 136 times, including 26 intentional leading to a astronomical OPS of 1.229. He is slugging .749 on the year and has only struck out 70 times. At this current pace, he will end the season with 64 homeruns and drive in 162.
Also, on the homefront, injuries are beginning to take their toll on the Sox. Having already lost Tony C, Roger Moret, Bill Lee, and Rollie Fingers for the season, Boston this past week also lost Billy Conigliaro for the year, backup OF Rocky Colavito until the postseason, starting pitcher Jonah Stickles for 3 weeks, and Ron Guidry for 2 weeks. With 3 teams now within 5 1/2 games in the AL East, I am not sure if we can hang on.
MLB Injury News:
Red Sox outfielder Billy Conigliaro will join his older brother on the Boston disabled list for the rest of the year. Conigliaro suffered a broken leg in a freak accident suffered while rounding the bases after a homerun. Billy C. was hitting .279 7-39 this year as a part time player forced into a starting role when his brother was injured.
Billy Parker of the California Angels will miss the rest of the regular season, but should be back in time for the World Series if the Angels make it that far. Parker suffered a sprained knee after being taken out on a double play. Parker was hitting .251 2-31 with 16 steals this year.
Up next for the struggling Sox is 3 games at home against the Milwaukee Brewers, followed by a huge series against the Baltimore Orioles.

Re: Impossible Dream???
Tough break losing Dwight .... and Darrell's going to break the home run record. Better check him for steroids!
I'd say the Yanks are (effectively) out, but Detroit and Baltimore are close enough to give you trouble. I'm pleased that your league's remained this competitive!
-
Re: Impossible Dream???
Cat: I thought the Yankees were out of it as well, and then they ripped off a 9 game winning streak, they are just 3.5 out now. The homeruns have interested me though. I figured there would be a spike in offense this year with the addition of the DH, but it's has increased significantly, and in both leagues. I will definitely need to focus my offseason attention on the pitching staff however.
-
Re: Impossible Dream???
A few questions:
What are your trades set at in League Editor? (+0, +20, etc.) It seems the AIs in your league were making a lot of them before.
This year the league seems much more competitive than in past years. In other words, no one's really running away from their rivals, and no one's sucking THAT badly. Have you done anything differently like played with finances, make trades/FAs for the AI, or anything like that?
Are you setting up the lineup/pitching rotation, or is the AI doing that?
-
Re: Impossible Dream???
Cat, I left everything at default. I just have gotten really lucky with this universe. Once this season ends, I plan on going through each team and making some trades that make sense for each team to try to get players buried in the minors to teams that they can play on, but only if the deal makes sense. In other words, I will make very few trades between division rivals. I tried taking control of teams and putting their best lineups out there, but as soon as I gave control back, they would usually change it back.
As far as ensuring that my team doesn't run away with it yearly, I just force myself to be fair with trades, I use the players personality to determine whether they will resign with me, or sign as a FA. For example, Rollie Fingers is unhappy as Sparky Lyle's setup man, his contract is up, I won't make an effort to resign him. One of my biggest challenges, which I will go into detail about in the offseason has to do with one of my best offensive talents. He hates playing in Boston, so I may end up having to trade him. Other than that, I don't really know why things are even this year. None of this helps that much, I know, but I am not really doing anything special.

Around the MLB:
Darrell Evans of the Atlanta Braves ended the season with 63 homeruns, setting a new mark for power excellence. He is only 26 years old so it should be interesting to see where his power numbers end up when its all said and done.
MLB Retirements:
Fred Gladding of the Detroit Tigers retired after the Tigers last game after spending all 12 of his big league seasons in Motown. Gladding was 52-36 with a 3.01 and a Detroit record 168 saves, good for 7th all time. He appeared in 426 games and his best season was 1968 when he compiled a mark of 5-1 with a 1.23 ERA with 19 saves in 21 chances.
MLB Injuries: (Only listing the injuries that impact the postseason)
Jim Fregosi of the California Angels will miss the whole postseason and the beginning of next year with a broken ankle suffered while turning a double play. This is a huge loss for the Angels headed into their ALCS matchup against the Red Sox. Fregosi hit .274 12-69 this year. He appeared in 152 of California's 162 games, so his production will be tough to replace.
