Big injury news for Boston as Don Money blew out his ACL rounding 2nd base and will miss the rest of the season. Tony Conigliaro is also out for the next 2-3 weeks with a bad heel. Because of these injuries, it forced us to make a deal to help strengthen our bench. We send minor league OF Jim Dwyer to Washington in exchange for 1B Dick Nen. Nen has some pop in his bat and can play 1B in a pinch.

The big news around baseball though is the play of the Seattle Pilots. They sit at 22-12 1.5 games out of first and P Don Cardwell threw a perfect game against the Kansas City Royals. Boxscore below:

In other trade news we cut salary by sending disappointing Ted Davidson to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for P Bill Short. Neither is anything special, but Short is making the league minimum and Davidson was making $180,000. Short 6-9 3.72 in AAA ball last year.

Big news here as Callison is an all star OF. He was hitting .327 9-23 for the Phillies this year. Bell has struggled for a while now, going 5-30 for the Indians since the start of the 1967 season. Jones was acquired in the Rocky Colavito trade with the Sox and missed most of last year with an injury. He was hitting .346 2-17 this year. The edge has to go to the Indians as Callison is in his prime.

The one veteran pitcher they brought in to provide stability, Jim Hannan, is currently 0-8 10.40. Will they win 10 games this year? Wait and see.

Around the MLB:

During the Boston/Seattle series, the two teams came to terms on a deal. Boston send P Dennis Bennett and P Joe Alexander to the Pilots in exchange for P Jim York and RF (who we then converted to a 1B) Jeff Burroughs. Bennett went 18-5 with the Sox last year, but didn't have a home once Steve Carlton matured, not to mention he was making over $220,000 per year. Burroughs was a 3rd round pick of Seattle this year, after hitting .342 with 41 HR's and driving in 136 RBI's in 144 games in H.S. If he matures, he could be the heir to firstbase in Boston.

Other All-Star Break News:

Boston has signed recently released 3rd baseman Eddie Mathews to a contract that will pay him roughly $80,000, or half of the $160,000 deal he signed. Mathews was hitting .247/.348/.418 5-29 with the San Fransisco Giants before his release. Mathews will replace Dick Nen, who had hit .125 (2-16) on the roster. Nen will go to AAA until rosters expand.

Leading off the 2nd half of the season for Boston is 3 in KC against the Royals followed by 3 in Oakland to face off against the much improved A's
