Lefebvre is hitting .279 14-60 on the year for the Dodgers after hitting .285 10-60 in an injury shortened year a year ago. His best year came in 1970 when he hit an NL leading .354 with 26 HR and 109 RBI. This deal will keep Jim in Dodger blue until he is 37 years old. MLB Injury News:
The San Diego Padres suffered a major blow to their already weak pitching staff, as 21 year old ace Bruce Berenyi will be out until at least the All-Star break next season after tearing a ligament in his elbow. Berenyi was just 6-16 4.68, but was the unquestioned ace of a staff that has a combined ERA of 5.64. Last year was Berenyi's best as he was 13-8 with a 3.56 in 33 starts.

Cubbage, in the running for Rookie of the Year, was hitting .294 8-52 on the year to go along with a 43/38 BB/K ratio. Former 200 hit man and veteran Al Gallagher will take Cubbage's place in the lineup. The Rangers currently sit one game up on the Chicago White Sox and in first place in the AL West after winning 5 straight games.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have also lost starting C Bob Stinson for the rest of the season after he suffered a broken bone in his neck in a home plate collision. Stinson was having his finest season at the plate, hitting .333 17-64 and will be replaced by 34 year old veteran Ellie Hendricks. Up next for the Red Sox, ending September are 6 games at home, the first three against the Baltimore Orioles followed by 3 vs. the Oakland Athletics. Next though is a player profile of Rico Petrocelli!
Americo Peter "Rico" Petrocelli
Born: June 27, 1943 in Brooklyn, NY
Contract: Earning $320,000 Through 1976
Debut: September 21, 1963 vs. Minnesota Twins
First Hit: September 21, 1963 (Double) off Lee Stange
First HR: June 20,1965 off Gary Peters (Chicago AL)
Rico has been a mainstay in the Red Sox infield since the 1965 season, bouncing between 3rd and short. He is a career .281 hitter with 270 HR (3rd on the All-Time Red Sox list) and 912 RBI (4th All-Time) to go along with 1,610 hits (5th All-Time) in 1,483 career games. Rico has made 3 All-Star Teams (1970,71,72), won the 1969 American League batting title when he hit .323, and was named both ALCS and World Series MVP in 1971 when he hit a combined .333 (10-30) with 5 HR and 14 RBI. His finest season came in 1969 when he hit .323 with 40 HR and 117 RBI. He also had a career high 199 hits, and made just 9 errors in 159 games at shortstop that year.
On being the "Elder Statesman" on the club: "You know, it's really strange. When I came up, we had players like Frank (Malzone), Felix (Mantilla), and Don (McMahon), these guys were great to me as a young player. They really showed me the ropes. What to eat, how to rent an apartment, what to wear on the road, stuff like that. I try to take what they taught me and teach the same things to Gorman (Thomas), George (Brett) and the other kids."
On moving around the infield: "I don't mind it. I came up as a shortstop, moved to 3rd and now I am back at short. My reflexes need to be a little sharper at 3rd, but I think it keeps me a little more involved in each pitch. I will play wherever the team needs me."
On the possibility that the team will not resign him after the 1976 season: "I don't worry about that stuff. I let my agent deal with it. I have spent my entire career in Boston, and this is where I want to stay. I know they have some great talent in the minor leagues, that Smith kid (Ozzie) is a real wizard with the glove, and if I anyway I can help him I will. I still feel like I can help this team, I mean I have hit 20 homeruns this year, and if they still feel I can help, then I'll be back. I don't need the money anymore, I just want to be someplace myself and my family are comfortable."
On being a transplanted New Yorker living and playing in Boston: "(laughs), Ya, it's been a little tough. I grew up a Dodger fan though, obviously, living in Brooklyn, so it hasn't been as bad as it could have been. The Yankees are a great organization and it's fun to battle them."
Proudest Individual Moment: "Probably the 1971 Post Season. Being named MVP of both playoff series was a great feeling. Coming through when it matters and people seeing that really made me proud. Obviously it helped that we won it all, but for me personally, I felt like I had given it all that year and played a big part in the championship."
What else would you like to accomplish: "I'd like to win another few World Series! (Laughs) Personally though, I'd really like to hit 300 (homeruns), and get to 2,000 hits. Those numbers, especially playing a position that isn't know for it's offense (shortstop), would be fantastic."
September 22,23,24 v Baltimore Orioles (77-70)
September 22-George Brett went 3-4 with 2 doubles and all 3 Red Sox RBI, and Gary Nolan made it stand up as he allowed just 2 runs over 8 innings as Boston got past Baltimore 3-2. (102-49)

September 23-Ted Simmons hit a 3 run HR in the 5th inning to bring Boston all the way back from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead, a lead Fergie Jenkins would make stand up, as Boston outlasted Baltimore 6-4. Gorman Thomas hit his 29th HR in the win. (103-49)
W-Fergie Jenkins (20-5) L-Jim Palmer (13-14) S-Steve Foucault (11)
September 24-Ron Guidry pitched a complete game shutout, his 2nd straight complete game, allowing 6 hits, 3 walks and 4 strikeouts, and George Brett had a 2 run double as Boston completed the sweep of the Orioles, winning 3-0. (104-49)
W-Ron Guidry (14-5) L-Dave Roberts (16-10)
September 25,26,27 v Oakland Athletics (62-91)
September 25-Reggie Smith hit 2 homeruns, driving in 5, and Ted Simmons added a HR and 3 RBI as Boston pounded out 13 hits and 7 walks as the Red Sox beat up on 18 year old rookie Dave Stieb and the A's 15-3. (105-49)
W-Roger Moret (20-6) L-Dave Stieb (2-6)
September 26-Billy Conigliaro went 3-5 with 3 RBI and George Brett added 2 hits and 2 RBI as Gary Nolan won his 4th straight start, beating Oakland 7-4. (106-49)
W-Gary Nolan (13-10) L-Fred Newman (8-14) S-Steve Foucault (12)
September 27-RBI's by Tony and Billy Conigliaro in the bottom of the 9th inning gave Boston a come from behind, 4-3 victory, sweep of the A's, and their 7th straight win. Rico Petrocelli hit HR number 21 in the victory. (107-49)

Opponents hit just .194 off Foucault on the year. Youngster Dan Quisenberry will take Foucault's spot in the bullpen and Sparky Lyle will be given another shot as closer.
Los Angeles will lose 3B Ron Cey until next season after Cey suffered a torn achillies tendon rounding the bases following a HR. Cey was hitting .280 25-91 and was a key contributor to the Dodgers offense this season. He will be replaced by journeyman Ted Martinez in the lineup.

Fergie Jenkins (20-5 3.24) v J.R. Richard (16-8 4.70)
The game was scoreless through 2 innings, when Rico Petrocelli drove in the first two runs of the ALCS with a HR into the Sox bullpen giving Boston a 2-0 lead. A pitchers duel, the game remained the same until the top of the 7th inning, when Boston increased their lead to 3-0 when Ken Griffey drove in Gorman Thomas with an RBI single. Texas however, showed its resiliency scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th on RBI doubles by Rusty Staub and Lew Beasley and the tying run scored on a fielding error by Griffey. The score stayed tied at 3 until the bottom of the 9th inning, when Staub doubled to lead off the 9th, and after Gene Garber retired Floyd Wicker and Beasley, Ed Brinkman, brought into the game as a defensive replacement laced a single through the left side, scoring Staub, giving the Rangers a 4-3 win and 1-0 Series lead.

ALCS Game Two--Boston Red Sox at Texas Rangers
Roger Moret (20-7 3.60) v Jerry Reuss (16-11 3.73)
Playing without Rico Petrocelli, who sprained his ankle in Game One, Boston got on the board early again after George Brett hit a 2 run blast into the camera well in center field, driving in Billy Conigliaro and giving the Sox a 2-0 lead. Texas got one back in the 3rd as Boston's continued sloppy defense attributed to the run as Billy Grabarkewitz throwing error allowed Lew Beasley to reach base and score 2 batters later on an RBI single from Rafael Robles to make it 2-1 Boston. The Rangers would take a 3-2 lead in the 5th as Al Gallagher drove in a run with a single and another Boston throwing error, this one by Brett, would allow the lead run to score. Jose Martinez RBI groundout would give Texas a 4-2 lead through 6, but Boston would come back to tie the game in the 7th as Brett would drive in Billy Conigliaro again, this time with a triple. However Brett would be thrown out at the plate trying to turn it into an inside the park HR, and this would prove costly, as two batters later Grabarkewitz would hit a solo HR tying the game at 4. As the game entered the bottom of the 8th inning, Floyd Wicker would lace a single to right, and Conigliaro would bobble the ball, Boston's 3rd error of the game, allowing Wicker to advance to 3rd, he would score on an RBI single to right by Beasley, and Charlie Hough would set Boston down in order in the 9th to secure the win, 5-4 and put the Rangers within one win of their first ever World Series appearance.

ALCS Game Three--Texas Rangers at Boston Red Sox
Vern Ruhle (9-2 3.42) v Bill Moran (16-11 3.72)
Texas would be the team striking early as Cecil Cooper would drive in a run with an RBI single in the top of the 1st inning. Boston would come back to take the lead in their half of the inning, on a leadoff HR by Reggie Smith and a throwing error by Al Gallagher would allow the tying run to score. Texas would tie the game in the 3rd on a sac fly from Jimmy Wynn. However, Boston would come right back, regaining the lead in their half of the inning as Billy Conigliaro hit a 3 run bomb over the Monster, giving Boston a 5-2 lead. The lead would be extended to 7-2 in the 5th as Gorman Thomas would drive in his first two runs of the series with a single, and Boston would blow the game open in the 7th with 4 more runs, capped by a 2 run single from Rico Petrocelli, they would add one more in the 8th, giving Boston a 12-3 win, and staving off elimination, and living to see a Game Four.

ALCS Game Four--Texas Rangers at Boston Red Sox
Gary Nolan (13-10 3.79) v J.R. Richard (16-8 4.70)
Injuries would play a role in this game as Boston would be without Billy Grabakewitz, who injured his shoulder and Texas would be missing star OF Jimmy Wynn, who tweaked his back. Boston would insert Gary Sutherland at second and Texas would move Floyd Wicker to left and put Al Oliver into center. The Red Sox would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning on a sac fly from Tony Conigliaro, scoring Sutherland. Texas, however, would take a 2-1 lead in the 5th on and RBI double from Jose Martinez and single by Al Gallagher. The score would remain 2-1 until the bottom of the 8th inning, when Gorman Thomas would drive in George Brett with an RBI single, tying the game at three. Boston, without Gene Garber, who had been injured since Game One, would go with Mickey Scott in the 9th, and after Scott allowed a 1 out single to Gallagher, Sparky Lyle was brought on to end the inning. The first batter he faced, Floyd Wicker, who the Rangers had signed off the scrap heap in Spring Training for just $80,000 would hit the first pitch he saw into the Red Sox bullpen in right, giving the Rangers a 4-2 lead, and after Kent Tekulve set the Sox down in order in the 9th, the Texas Rangers won their first American League Pennant and would represent the American League in the 1975 World Series. Charlie Hough, who pitched in Games One and Two, winning them both, when he threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing 4 hits, no runs or walks and striking out 4 was named ALCS MVP. Who will the Rangers face in the World Series? Stay tuned!
