The Mets were 10 games out of the NL East lead as late as the end of May, so the fact they are here is amazin. The Giants offense, while very potent in the middle, is also injured. ALCS Boston Red Sox V Chicago White Sox

Game One Boston Red Sox at Chicago White Sox
A scoreless game turned into a 3-0 White Sox lead after 5 innings on a solo HR by Tommy Agee and RBI single by Jorge Orta in the 4th and a HR by Cotton Nash in the 5th. Boston tied the game in the 6th on a throwing error and RBI singles by Dwight Evans and Toby Harrah. It remained that way until the 8th, when an error, sac bunt and single by Ken Hottman gave the White Sox a 4-3 lead after 8. Pedro Borbon got the first two outs of the innings, but then gave up a single to George Brett and allowed him to steal 2nd. Billy Grabarkewitz game up and proceeded to drive him in, tying the game at 5. Sparky Lyle would come on in the bottom of the 9th inning and give up a one out double to Cotton Nash and with two outs, Bill Melton would single through the right side, scoring Nash and giving the White Sox a 5-4 win and 1-0 lead in the series.

Game Two Boston Red Sox at Chicago White Sox
The White Sox would take a 3-0 lead after two innings on an RBI single and RBI double by Bill Melton and Walt Williams in the 1st respectively and solo HR by Tommy Dean in the 2nd. Boston would tie it in the third on back to back homeruns by Tony Conigliaro, a 2 run shot and Dwight Evans, a solo HR. Boston would take the lead in the 6th as Ted Simmons would produce an RBI single off Jim O'Toole. It would remain 4-3 until the bottom of the 7th when things would fall apart for the Red Sox. Steve Foucault came on to pitch the 7th, and gave up 4 runs, capped by a 3 run blast by Bill Melton to give the White Sox a 7-4 lead. Cecil Upshaw would pitch the 8th and fare no better, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs, lead by a 2 run single by Walt Williams and RBI single by Tommy Harper to give Chicago an 11-4 lead. The game would end with that same score and put the White Sox 1 game away from the World Series.

Game Three Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox
As the series moved to Boston, we saw a pitchers duel for the first 3 innings when Bill Melton gave the Southsiders a 2-0 lead with a towering two run blast to center. Boston would get one game in the bottom of the inning as Toby Harrah would drive in Dwight Evans with an RBI single. The Red Sox would tie the game in the 5th as Tony Conigliaro would hit a solo HR to left, over the Green Monster. The score would stay tied until the 7th, when Conigliaro would hit another HR, his 3rd of the series, a 2 run shot to give Boston a 4-2 lead. 4 more runs were tacked on the in 8th including a 2 run blast by Ted Simmons would give Boston an 8-2 lead. Those runs were important as Bill Melton hit his 2nd 2 run blast of the game in the 9th, but that was all the scoring the White Sox would do as Boston forced a game 4 with an 8-4 victory.

Game Four Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox
The White Sox got to Fergie Jenkins early, scoring 3 times in the top of the 1st inning on a two run triple by Walt Williams and an RBI single by Bill Madlock. The game would remain 3-0 until the fifth, when Boston cut the lead to 3-1 as Rico Petrocelli hit a solo HR to left. In the eighth, with Pedro Borbon pitching, Dwight Evans drove in Tony Conligliaro with an RBI triple cutting the White Sox lead to 3-2. Closer Cy Acosta and his 1.60 ERA came on to pitch the bottom of the 9th where he walked George Brett and Billy Grabarkewitz to lead off the inning. A sac bunt put runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out for Reggie Smith who drove in the game tying run and then Ted Simmons laced a single to center, scoring Grabarkewitz, giving Boston a 4-3 win and tying the ALCS at 2 games apiece.

Game Five Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox
In one of the most wild series deciding games in baseball history, Chicago jumped out to a 3-1 lead after 1 1/2 innings with RBI's from Tommy Agee (solo HR), a single from Tommy Harper and double from Tommy Dean. Boston would then explode for 7 runs in the bottom of the 2nd, capped by a 2 run HR from Dwight Evans. Reggie Smith also homered in the inning to give Boston a 8-3 lead. Chicago would chip away at the lead, eventually taking a 10-8 lead as Walt Williams hit a 2 run HR in the 3rd, Tommy Agee smoked a 2 run single to right in the 4th and Ivan Murrell hit a pinch hit 3 run blast to right in the 5th giving Chicago the lead. Boston got one back in the 5th as Billy Grabarkewitz drove in a run with an RBI single, but in the bottom of the 6th things got hectic once again as Boston scored 6 more times. 3 straight RBI singles from Dwight Evans, Toby Harrah and BIlly Conigliaro would give Boston a 12-10 lead and then Rico Petrocelli would cap the inning off with a 3 run blast, putting Boston ahead 16-10 after 6 innings. Boston would add one in the 7th on a sac fly for a 17-10 lead and Gene Garber, Steve Foucault and Sparky Lyle closed the door on the White Sox for the last 4 innings, Boston would complete the improbable comeback, beating Chicago and head to the World Series for the 5th straight year to face...........who? Game One-Boston Red Sox at San Fransisco Giants
The 1974 Series started with a bang as the Giants scored twice off Fergie Jenkins in the top of the 1st inning on RBI's by Dave Kingman and Joe Ferguson. However, Boston came back in the bottom of the inning by plating 6 runs against former Sox pitcher and surprise Game One starter Steve Carlton. Solo HR's by Reggie Smith and Tony Conigliaro tied the game, and Billy Grabarkewitz untied it with a grand slam, making it 6-2 Boston after 1. The Giants picked up one in the top of the 2nd, and Boston got that run back in the 3rd on an RBI single by Grabarkewitz, making it 7-3. Boston extended that lead to 9-3 in the 5th as Reggie Smith drove in a pair with an RBI single. The Sox then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the 7th as Toby Harrah hit another grand slam giving Boston a 13-3 lead, in a game they would eventually win 13-4, taking a 1-0 series lead.

Game Two-San Fransisco Giants at Boston Red Sox
4 straight RBI singles and a 2 run double by Ed Goodson, playing only because of the DH rule, gave San Fransisco a 6-0 lead after 2 innings. Goodsen then homered in the 4th, increasing the lead to 7-0. Boston got 3 back in the bottom of the inning as Billy Grabarkewitz hit a 3 run blast over the wall in left to bring Boston closer. In the bottom of the 5th inning, Boston tied the game at 7 as Toby Harrah hit an RBI single, Billy Grabarkewitz hit an RBI double and Billy Conigliaro hit a 2 run HR to right. In the top of the 7th inning, Joe Ferguson hit a solo HR off Gary Nolan to give the Giants an 8-7 lead. Entering the bottom of the 8th, Toby Harrah and George Brett had RBI singles to give Boston a 9-8 lead. Sparky Lyle came on to close out the game, 3 hits, 1 error and 4 runs later, San Fransisco had a 12-9 lead. Dick Green had the big hit with a 2 run double with two outs. Boston would get one back in the bottom of the 9th but the Giants would close it out, winning 12-10, tying the series at one game each.

In a classic pitchers, Fergie Jenkins and Gaylord Perry were dominating, Perry for 6 innings, and Jenkings for the full nine as Boston nipped San Fransisco 1-0. The only run of the game came in the top of the third on back to back doubles by Reggie Smith and Ted Simmons. Game Four-Boston Red Sox at San Fransisco Giants
Boston moved within one game of a World Series championship as they beat the Giants 6-1 in Game Four. Boston took 3-0 lead after 3 Billy Grabarkewitz hit a solo HR leading off the inning and Ted Simmons hit a 2 run shot later in the inning. The lead was extended to 4-0 after 4 as Billy Conigliaro singled in Toby Harrah. Boston scored 2 more in the 9th on a 2 run blast to dead center field by Tony Conigliaro giving Boston a 6-0 lead. The Giants would score one in the bottom of the 9th but it wasn't enough as Boston took a 3-1 series lead.

Game Five Boston Red Sox at San Fransisco Giants
The Boston Red Sox won their 3rd World Championship in 5 years, as they beat the Giants in Game Five by a score of 10-4. Boston took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd on an RBI single by Billy Grabarkewitz, but the Giants would come back to score 2 in their half of the 2nd on a 2 run HR by Art Shamsky. In the top of the 3rd, Tony Conigliaro and Dwight Evans went back to back to give Boston a 3-2 lead and the Giants came right back to tie the score at 3 in the bottom of the 4th on a solo HR by Bobby Bonds, and then took the lead on a double play groundout. The score remained 4-3 until the 7th, when Boston exploded for 7 runs, capped by a pinch hit grand slam by rookie Gorman Thomas, giving Boston a 10-4 lead. The Sox pen would shut down the Giants for the remaining 3 innings, as the Boston Red Sox completed a magical season, winning the Series in 5 games. Billy Grabarkewitz was named World Series MVP after hitting .500 (11-22) with 3 HR and 11 RBI.

There were 6 Red Sox up for new contracts this year. First we decided not to offer contracts to Larry Bowa, who wanted $133,000 per year, and Jonah Stickles, who declined his $313,000 player option and asked for $350,000 per year. We may try to bring Stickles back during free agency. Also, we decided to part ways with Cecil Upshaw, who wanted a raise from $77,000 per year to just over $310,000. It was tough to let Upshaw go, but no bullpen arm will make more than Sparky Lyle's $298,000 a year. If he comes down from those demands, we may try to bring him back.

Those we did bring back were all on one year deals. First, Ken Brett won his arbitration case, when he was given $130,000 for the 1975 season. The team offered $110,000, after Brett went 4-1 with a 6.95 ERA last year in 79 innings.

Next we turned our attention to the arbitration case of P Roger Moret. We are really hesistant to give Moret more than a one year contract until he proves he can stay healthy for a full year. Moret rebounded from a poor 1973 season to post a 13-7 3.88 ERA in 25 starts. He pitched 167 innings, and posting a 124/49 K/BB ratio. He asked for $283,000 in arbitration and we offered $220,000. The judge saw it our way and Moret will make $220,000 in 1975.

Our last case was with 2B Toby Harrah. He asked for $414,000 for the upcoming season, and we countered with $375,000. Harrah hit .290 25-106 last year with 36 doubles and a 77/63 BB/K ratio. He also lead the team with 11 steals. We won our second arbitration case as Harrah was awarded $375,000 for next year.

Offseason Trade News:

It was a busy offseason with the Pittsburgh Pirates being the most active team, trying to shed some payroll without stripping too much talent. First they sent RP Bill Laxton (80) to the Houston Astros for minor league 3B Steve Ontiveros (75/85). It looks as though Houston will be going for it, despite finishing last last year. They get everyone back from injuries and Laxton will help solidify their bullpen. He was 8-8 5.24 for the Pirates a year ago.

Next they sent 1B Tony Horton (84/85) to the St. Louis Cardinals for prospects P Greg Harris (66/90), and C Ron Hassey (64/80). St. Louis needed a 1B after Mike Epstein really regressed last year, hitting only .213. It was a steep price to pay, but Harris and Hassey are both 19, so anything could happen.

The big trade however saw the Pirates send SS Freddie Patek (88) to the Chicago Cubs for SP Ed Halicki (88) and P Paul Reuschel (80/81). Patek becomes the Cubs leadoff hitter and assuming the pitching holds up, should help the Cubs challenge the Mets this year. Patek hit .265 2-33 and lead the NL in steals with 48. Halicki becomes the #2 starter behind Bruce Houston and gives the Pirates a very nice 1-2 combo.

Other Offseason Trades:

Cincinnati sends P Jay Howell (66/82) to the Cleveland Indians for 3B Kurt Bevacqua (83). Cleveland decided to move Bevaqua, who was blocking young Buddy Bell and in return got a promising 18 year old reliever. Bevacqua hit .301 3-35 for the Indians a year ago.

Kansas City sends 3B Graig Nettles (80) to the California Angels for 2B Jerry Remy (78/86) and IF Rance Mulliniks (53/77). Again, a steep price, but Nettles solidifies the Angels lineup in an attempt to catch the White Sox. In Remy, the Royals get the replacement for Glenn Beckert when he leaves.

Milwaukee sends C Frank Estrada (82/83) to the New York Mets in exchange for OF Gary Mathews (79/94). The Mets, who had been looking for C help all year, turn to the player they let go at the end of the 1973 season. Estrada, in his first full year, hit .321 1-47 for the Brewers. Milwaukee was looking to get out from under his contract and Mathews immediately becomes their starting LF.

Baltimore sends 2B Jim Gantner (71/80) and C Terry Humphrey (68/79) to the Milwaukee Brewers for LF Curtis Brown (82/83). Brown will become a 4th outfielder, but should be a valuable piece for the Orioles. He hit .288 17-93 a year ago for Milwaukee.

New York sends SS Bert Campaneris (81) to the Cleveland Indians for OF Merv Rettemund (80). Campaneris was unhappy being stuck behind Sonny Jackson in New York so the Mets sent him someplace he can play everyday. He becomes the starting SS, unseating Lou Camilli. Rettemund will be a key bat off the bench until youngster Dave Parker is ready to be called up fulltime for the Mets.

The Red Sox only made one move this offseason, bringing in 35 year old LF Lou Brock, signing him to a two year deal worth $225,000 per year. Brock had been used primarily as a pinch hitter/runner for the Cardinals for the last 4 seasons, is a career .285 hitter with 374 career stolen bases. He will be Boston's 4th outfielder and defensive replacement.
