MLB Trade News:
The Red Sox made a minor trade this week to shore up a lack of depth in the minor leagues, sending lefthander pitcher Vida Blue to the Kansas City Royals for C Ernie Whitt. Blue seemed to have hit his ceiling, and while average, it was just that. Whitt gives us a young catcher, who should be able to at least back up Simmons once Jim French is gone.

San Diego sends RF Willie Crawford
I like this move for San Diego. The three pitchers they get are all high 70's peak guys, but moving Crawford allows them to finally play Richie Zisk everyday, and he is going to be a monster. Having Zisk and Joe Rudi at the corner outfielder spots, gives the Padres a solid 4-5 in the lineup for a long time to come.
Up next for Boston are 3 games in Detroit against the Tigers followed by 3 at home vs the New York Yankees.

2nd Round (47th overall) SS U.L. Washington: Good speed 21/26 in steal chances in High School. Hit .358/.433/.496 with 2 HR's as a senior. Basically a singles hitter, but is an above average fielder.
3rd Round (71st overall) LF Larry Herndon: Hit .429/.508/.695 as a senior with 5 HR's, 7 doubles in 30 games. Projects to a 4th outfielder, but this is also where we drafted Juan Beniquez and he improved drastically after a couple years.
4th Round (95th overall) P Tom Hume: 3-0 2.18 in 33 IP as a senior. He struck out 27 while walking only 8. Had an almost identical 3-1 2.67 in 30 IP as a junior with 23 K's and 8 walks.
5th Round (119th overall) 1B Dave Bergman: .374/.523/.535 as a senior. He has a teriffic eye as shown in his career 107/44 BB/K ratio in High School. Won't hit a ton of HR's, only 13 in H.S., but should hit alot of doubles.
6th Round (143rd overall) P Dennis DeBarr: 2-0 with a sparkling 0.52 ERA as a senior covering 34 IP. He struck out 28 and walked just 5. However, with that success, he doesn't project to do much as a major leaguer.

June 15,16,17 v Baltimore Orioles (43-26)
June 15-Boog Powell hit a 3 run HR in the 8th inning to tie the game at 4, then in the 15th the Orioles and Sox each scored 2 times to tie the game at 6 after 15 innings. Manny Sanguillen then hit a 2 run double and the Orioles added a 3rd run to take a 9-6 lead entering the bottom of the 18th inning. Baltimore was relying on Bill Connors, who 2 years ago was pitching in the Independant Leagues. He proceeded to give up back to back homeruns to Don Baylor and Rico Petrocelli and then a walkoff double to Ted Simmons as Boston won 10-9 in 18 grueling innings. Boxscore below: (50-17)

MLB Trade News:
A couple of real big trades went down over the last week. We'll start with the one the Red Sox were involved in. This came out of nowhere, as the San Diego Padres called expressing interest in Don Money, who was due for arbitration this year. When it was all said and done, Boston sent 2B/3B Don Money to the Padres in exchange for IF Chris Speier and 1B Bill Buckner. Money had struggled so far this year, hitting .247 with 8 HR and 37 RBI, after hitting 25 HR and driving in almost 100 last year. Speier was hitting .443 2-35 in AA so far this year and will move right to AAA Pawtucket. Buckner, a former Sox farmhand was another expansion draft loss we have been looking to reacquire. He was hitting .357 8-52 with only 11 K's in 253 AB's in AA. Toby Harrah comes up from AAA to play second base. What does this mean for the contract of Ron Santo. Honestly, I don't have any idea right now!
The other two deals involved the Milwaukee Brewers, who continue to dump salary.

This actually wasn't a bad deal for the Brewers, as Pizarro was just about done. Assuming they can resign Marshall, edge Milwaukee.

Cruz could end up being a very special player, but to trade him straight up for Clemente, who is 112 hits from 3000, and was one of two marketable players (Carl Yastrzemski being the other) the Brewers have.

The Sox also made a deal with the Atlanta Braves during the All-Star Break. Boston sends P Lindy McDaniel, 1B Bill Buckner, and 2B Frank White to Atlanta in exchange for RP Cecil Upshaw. This was alot to give up for a short reliever, but McDaniel has struggled all year and I think his age is finally catching up with him. We hate to lose Buckner, but after reacquiring him, came to the conclusion he was behing John Mayberry and Jeff Burroughs on the depth chart. White may be a good prospect, but he is very slow in coming along. Upshaw was 0-2 with a 1.56 in AAA for the Braves and 0-1 2.81 in 14 games with the big club. He gives us depth should we not be able to come to terms with Rollie Fingers at seasons end.
Editors Note: The Don Money trade ended badly for us as we received Buckner (since traded) and Chris Speier, who was an 84/92 when he acquired him and is now just an 84. Oh well, win some lose some.
Kicking off the 2nd half of the year for the Sox is 3 games at home against the Detroit Tigers followed by 3 games at home against the A's. As a side note, Bill Lee is out for the next month with an inflamed rotator cuff.

MLB Trade News:
A moderate flurry of trade activity leading up to the trade deadline. First the Red Sox made a couple of trades, designed for helping the future. First we sent OF Billy North to the LA Dodgers in exchange for IF Billy Grabarkewitz. North was tearing up AA ball to the tune of .411 4-82 to go along with 35 steals, but we weren't sure he'd ever get the chance to play everyday in Boston. Grabarkewitz was hitting .346 12-83 with 111 BB in AA, and will at least be able to take Joe Foy's spot in a year or two.
The second deal saw Boston send IF Chris Speier to the Philadephia Phillies for SS Larry Bowa. Speier wasn't what we though he was when we acquired him. Bowa doesn't hit for any power, but is currently hitting .346 in AAA with only 1 error in 101 games. He should be our starting SS next year with Petrocelli moving to 3rd.
