Minor trade news out of Boston as the Red Sox reacquire lefthanded pitcher Ken Brett from the San Diego Padres in exchange for P Gary Timberlake. We never wanted to lose Brett in the expansion draft, so getting him for a pitcher we signed off waivers works for us.

Bad news out of Boston as P Jim Lonborg has demanded that we either meet his requests for a contract extension of 3 years $440,000 per year, or we trade him. With Charlie Hough, Roger Moret and Ron Guidry waiting in the wings, I am not sure we will be willing to cave to this, so with the trade deadline coming up in the next month, we'll have to pay attention to this to see what happens!

Hit .461/.583/.557 as a senior, and .486/.594/.559 as a junior, so the kid can hit, but can he hit enough to overcome his lack of any other real talent, that's the question.
4th Round (94th overall) P Dave Wehrmeister- 9-7 3.42 career mark. Drafted him basically because I didn't want to not draft a pitcher this year. May become a back of the bullpen strikeout pitcher after striking out 120 in 134 innings in H.S.
5th Round (118th overall) OF Jerry Hairston- .315/.483/..415 as a senior with a 41/13 BB/K ratio. Like Gross, can hit for average and will walk, but can he do other things well enough to stick around. I doubt it.
6th Round (142nd overall) 1B Pete LaCock- .365/.479/.600 6-32 as a senior in 35 games. His senior year vaulted him to a potential draftee, but don't expect much.

After much speculation, the Red Sox have finally found a taker for P Jim Lonborg, sending the disgruntled righty to the Houston Astros in exchange for 2 blue chip minor leaguers, RP Bob Forsch and 1B John Mayberry.
Lonborg was 7-3 this year for Boston, and is 73-58 with a 3.36 ERA for his career. Forsch was 7-1 1.86 in AA ball for Houston and will move to AAA. Mayberry is currently on the DL with a bad elbow, but hit .282/.393/.503 10-36 last year in A ball and once he comes off the DL will move to either AA or AAA.

Ernie Banks of the Montreal Expos retired this week at age 39. He was a career .277/.334/.506 hitter with 479 HR and 1502 RBI. Banks was an all-star 11 times in his career, 10 with the Cubs and once as a firstbaseman for the expansion Expos. He won 2 gold gloves (1960, 1967) and 2 MVP awards (1958, 1959).

Norm Cash of the Detroit Tigers knocked in his 1000th run

The Red Sox have come to terms with a couple of their pitchers who were eligible for arbitration this offseason. First we resigned P Jim York to a 4 year deal worth $143,000 per year. York has blossomed so far this year, putting up a 3.80 ERA this year in 42 innings, but his DICE is just 2.96 which means he is getting very unlucky. Boston also resigned lefthander Steve Carlton to a 4 year deal totalling $836,000. Carlton has made some strides this year, going 11-7 3.40, but still has plenty of room to improve, and this deal should take us right up to his prime years.
