Trot Nixon said he expects to miss at least five to seven days after suffering a mild strain of his left groin.
Even though he's struggled so far, Wily Mo Pena should act as Boston's right fielder for as long as Nixon is out.

anyone see wily mo try to steal a homerun only to have it fall out of his glove?

I feel bad for Foulke. Now he has a sky-high ERA because Wily Mo couldn't keep it in the glove.
As far as losing Arroyo, I was already saying that Wells is done. Tonight (7 earned in 4 innings) doesn't help his cause. I'm thinking I'd be chucking Wells and looking for a 5th starter somewhere, even if it means Papelbon or AAA. I just don't see getting even replacement-level performance out of Boomer anymore. Does anyone think he'll prove me wrong?

Yeah, I think so. I think that pretty clearly he's no longer among the better pitchers in the league, but he's still better than what most teams have as their 4th or 5th starter.
Re: Bronson Arroyo traded for Wily Mo Pena
Looked to me like two BP pitchers trying to get in some work. Willy mo can't take all of the blame for a ball hit that hard and far. As far as Wells goes, yup, he's done, been done. If not for so much run support last season he'd have been in big trouble. Is it possible that he's fatter than last year? Not being a smartass but he looked quite a bit larger than the last time I saw him. By the way, he also got crushed in Pawtucket last week (Boston's triple A club).
Re: Bronson Arroyo traded for Wily Mo Pena
But on the positive side........ Giving Boomer all the rope he needs to hang himself sends a good message to other players in that the team is loyal to their guys under contract. They did it with Kevin Millar too. And to think that Bronson could have been the answer at first last year and he was overlooked..............
Re: Bronson Arroyo traded for Wily Mo Pena
Let's assume Arroyo has peaked. But, the guy's built like a twig and I can't recall any injuries. Guys like him are more crafty than all get out. They tend to have staying power. I could see a pitcher like Arroyo lasting into his 40's. I generally feel a guy like Arroyo can actually only make other pitchers around him better. He's got so much break on his pitches its almost dangerous. When all is said and done he's not a 6'5" 225lb power pitcher. That guy needs to be a pitching coach someday -- even if he doesn't have a fastball.
This business about having Wells and Schilling. We'll all admit. Schilling is an inspiration. As for Wells... That dude is legendary. I just don't know how much longer he can last. I remember the day he threw a no-hitter drunk. Many young pitchers are going to remember that too. I think he's done at the end of the year.
As for Wakefield. I heard him specifically mention that he wants to pitch past his 50th birthday! There's a guy with staying power. Reminds of Tommy John, Charlie Hough, and who's that other guy I used to see on the Yanks. Gosh.
Re: Bronson Arroyo traded for Wily Mo Pena
Niekro maybe? Wells had offseason knee surgery and came back looking bigger than at the end of last season. He really should have dropped some weight after knee surgery, especially if he wanted to come back and try and get his incentives again this season. The guy looked lkke he was wearing a toga, his uniform was that big.
