Since I was able to buy FM 2009 today, I've decided to do another season with the Falcons. I'm using 2K9 on Mogul difficulty with the latest rosters that were posted on the boards. I'll be playing out each of Atlanta's games and I'll post screenshots after each of their games along with the scores and standings around the rest of the league.

Hope everyone enjoys following along.

Mid Season Observations
While I expected Atlanta to have a losing season I didn't expect it to be quite this bad, with only 1 win halfway through. The Falcons average a little over 16 points per game, while giving up almost 31 points per game. It's hard to pinpoint just one area that needs improving, since it seems we're struggling all across the board. Interceptions are killing us along with the a week offensive line, giving up multiple sacks per game.

One area that I'm really disappointed in is the running game. Overall, I'm averaging just 2-3 yards per carry. I realize that this has alot to do with the offense and the defense of the teams we're playing, but it seems extremely low. Even against teams that have a poor running defense and/or when they are playing deep, looking for the pass, I'm only getting 2-3 yards per carry. This makes it hard to rely on the run, thus putting more pressure on the QB and receivers to make the passing plays. I think someone else has mentioned that the yards per carry for human controlled teams is low when compared to those of the computer teams. And after playing half a season, I think that is the case as well.

2010 3rd round pick and their 2011 2nd round pick.

Injuries

102 rushing yards, 292 passing yards, 394 total yards.

2009 Atlanta Falcons Starters

During the offseason alot of dead weight was cut. We only signed 2 free agents FB Heath Evans and WR Calvin Johnson. We also managed to get a couple of decent picks in the draft, including S Taylor Mays (79/84) and FB Rex Netherton (73/90). Both of these prospects show alot of promise and will hopefully be a strong part of Atlanta's future.

After a season like 08, there's only one place to go and that is up. While we would love to have a winning record this season, realistically, we are shooting to at least break even at .500.

Troy Smith will be our starting QB this season, but look for young Matt Ryan to start some games as he is beginning to develop and show some of his potential.

This is probably the toughest loss of the season for the Falcons. The defense was great on both sides, with Atlanta up 7-3 going into the 4th quarter. The Cardinals then put 7 on the board to put them up 10-7. With 1:46 left in the game, the Falcons had to settle for a field goal and played for overtime with the game tied at 10-10. Arizona took possession with 1:25 left and marched down field to a 4th and goal situation with 24 seconds left. Matt Stover then put the final nail in the coffin with a 19 yard field goal to give Arizona a 13-10 win.

New Orleans (3-8) @ Atlanta (4-7)

Coming off of a tough loss in week 12, Atlanta bounces back in a big way with a 28-20 win over the New Orleans Saints. The Falcons exploited the weak run defense of the Saints, rushing for 201 yards, with RB Michael Turner collecting 160 of those and scoring all 4 TD's for Atlanta. Atlanta looks to keep the momentum going as they face a tough Pittsburgh team in Week 14.

Highs

Atlanta (5-7) @ Pittsburgh (8-4)

What a nail-biter of a game! Atlanta was definitely the underdog heading into this one against Pittsburgh, but the Falcons kept it close until the very end. Things were looking good for us, up 10-7 at half-time, but the Steelers put 7 on the board making it 10-14, Pittsburgh. They added to their lead in the 4th quarter with a 51 yard field goal by Jeff Reed, putting us down 10-17. But Atlanta fought back on their next possession with QB Matt Ryan connecting with WR Roddy White for a 53 yard TD! Going for broke, we went for the 2 point conversion and was greeted with success, putting Atlanta on top 18-17 with just under 4 minutes left in the game. The Falcons defense went to work, stopping the Steelers drive and taking possession at the 2 minute warning, but we could do nothing to advance the ball and run down the clock, forcing us to punt with 1:30 left on the clock. Pittsburgh drove the ball down the field and with just 12 seconds left, Jeff Reed kicked a 38 yard field goal, to give the Steelers a 20-18 win and a heartbreaking loss for Atlanta fans!

Highs
QB Matt Ryan 13/25 194 yards, 1 TD.
LB Curtis Lofton 7.0 tackles.

Lows

2009 Season Thoughts
Our goal coming into the 2009 season was to finish with at least a .500 record, but we came up far short of meeting those expectations, with a record of 5-11, but that is an improvement over our 2008 record of 3-13.

While our run defense is pretty solid, we will be looking to improve our pass defense during the offseason, along with acquiring a good OT or two and a decent TE to shore up our offensive line.

Atlanta Falcons 2009 Player Highlights
QB Matt Ryan struggled with interceptions during the season but started to show his potential in the latter part and will more than likely be our starting QB for the 2010 season.

WR Roddy White was 3rd in the NFC with 91 receptions and lead the NFC with 1,336 receiving yards.

RB Michael Turner lead the NFC with 315 carries, 2nd with 13 rushing TD's and 7th in the conference with 1,058 rushing yards.

TE Daniel Graham (81/81) and T Marvel Smith (88/88). Their experience and skills will be a great addition to our offense. 2010 Atlanta Falcons Starters

I'm very optimistic about our chances of having our first winning season as the 2010 season starts. This is without a doubt the best team that Atlanta has had in my 3 year history. QB Matty Ryan is continuing to develop and has earned the starting spot. The addition of TE Daniel Graham and T Marvel Smith will certainly help our offensive line. Roddy White and Laurent Robinson at WR will be a tough tandem to beat. I'm looking for a winning season this year and anything less will be a disappointment. Our defense is pretty solid as well, but I am concerned about our pass defense as that is the major weak spot in our team.

Thanks Artic. Another OT is a must have for us in next years draft. Michael Turner is signed through 2011 and he's decent enough, but as you suggest we need a young RB for our future. Overall my starters are solid, but my bench lacks depth as far as talent. So injuries are more than likely going to come into play and force me to use players that I would rather keep on the bench as is the case with Brandon Moore at G. Yeah, when you're building a team you're usually going to have bad depth because you're focused on improving your starting lineup. As that improves (and it looks like it is), then you can go to just drafting the best player instead of guys for specific positions where you're desperate.

Exactly. I'm really looking forward to the next draft and being able to give my team some depth. It's been a fun ride so far and a heck of a challenge. But I'm beginning to make some good progress and all in all, I think I'm doing pretty good for a casual fan. :)

QB Matt Ryan threw 4 interceptions on the day, giving the Pittsburgh Steelers an easy 26-9 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Highs
WR Calving Johnson - 7 receptions, 136 yards.
5 sacks by our defense.

Lows
Our achilles heel all season long - 4 interceptions by the Steelers.

2010 Season Reflections
We end our season at .500 with an 8-8 record. We underperformed early in the season, but played liked the team we are in the latter have, winning 5 straight games to give us our first winning season. Overall, I'm happy with our season, although I think our record doesn't reflect how good our team really is. I'll be looking to improve some key positions on our roster during the off-season and hopefully massage this team into a contender for 2011.

Thanks Artic. Hitting that .500 mark is almost as good as a Super Bowl win after the previous years. :) Ryan had an awesome year as you can see below. He's still throwing way too many interceptions though. But on the good side he was 10th in completions in the NFC with 251, 4th in passing yards with 3,587 and he's the 3rd rated highest QB in the NFC at 90.7

Trades
WR Pete McLaskey and FB Harold Grassey to New Orleans for T Jon Stinchcomb

Feeling that we have a pretty solid team in place, we resigned many of our starters for the upcoming 2011 season. We really needed another good starting tackle for our OL and managed to work a trade with New Orleans for T Jon Stinchcomb, in exchange for WR Pete McLaskey and FB Harold Grassey. With the addition of Stinchcomb we have 2 great starting tackles and now have some depth at that position with Sam Baker and Chris Christie in reserve.

New Orleans (2-0) @ Atlanta (1-1)

What a game! We were up against a tough New Orleans team, up by a touchdown in the 4th quarter, when the Saints tied it up at 20-20 with just over 3 minutes left. We took possession on our own 30 and began to march down the field, running down the clock, just looking to get into field goal range. The Saints stopped us at their 26 with 22 seconds left in the game. We brought out our field goal unit and Kevin Jackson misses a 43 yard attempt and sends this one into overtime! Argh!! Both teams played great defense in overtime. At the 4:23 mark we found ourselves once again deep inside New Orleans territory at their 23 yard line, 4th and goal......and Kevin Jackson misses again!! Dammit!! The Saints take possession drive the ball downfield to our 26 and Taylor Mehlhaff comes on to kick a 45 yard field goal to give New Orleans a 23-20 win. Unbelievable!

The Baltimore Ravens were the favorites heading into this game but it was a nail-biter to the end. With just under 7 minutes left in the 4th quarter, the Falcons were down 24-23. Baltimore was forced to punt and Atlanta took possession on their own 45. Keeping the ball on the ground for the most part, we did an awesome job moving the ball downfield while eating away at the clock. But the Cowboys responded on their next drive with a touchdown, putting them up 42-31 with just over 5 minutes left in the game. QB Matt Ryan lead his team downfield on the next drive, ending with a 4 yard TD pass to WR Roddy White to narrow the lead at 42-38 with 2:46 seconds left in the game. Our defense shut the door on the Cowboys on their next possession and they were forced to punt, with Atlanta taking control with a 1:12 left. Yeah, to be that close after 4 seasons and to lose a game in Week 16 that could mean the difference for a possible playoff appearance hurts big time.

Atlanta (7-8) @ Cincinnati (7-8)

It all came down to the final game of the season, with the Falcons tied for first with the Saints in the weak NFC South. Atlanta was in a do or die situation, needing a win against Cincinnati if they were to even have a shot at making the playoffs.

Despite 4 sacks by the Bengals defensive line, QB Matt Ryan stepped up under pressure to lead the Falcons to a 24-14 win over the heavily favored Bengals. With the upset win, Atlanta retired to the locker room to sweat it out, needing the Giants to beat the Saints in order to make the playoffs. There was dead silence in the locker room as the scores from around the league began to roll in and then a huge eruption as THE game showed on the screen:

Saints 13
Giants 27

After 4 long seasons, Atlanta has finally made the playoffs!! Yes!! We'll be facing the Giants (10-6) in the Wildcard. We like our chances going into this game against New York, winning both times that we faced them during the regular season.

Congrats on the big win. Pretty cool that you play the Giants again, who just helped you out. And shouldn't the game be in Atlanta since you are the #4 seed?

Thanks. I appreciate the win by the Giants, but now I need their co-operation again...with them losing to us. :) Now that you mention it, you're right. On the standings screen it's showing @ New York, but on Atlanta's Calendar screen it does indeed show the Falcons hosting the Giants.

Thanks. As I said, we played great defense against them. And to be honest, I'm actually getting much better at play calling (especially on defense) and managing the clock as oppossed to when I first started playing FM. My persistance and learning some tips from you guys has started to pay off.

PlayOffs Divisional - 2011
Atlanta (8-8) @ Detroit (11-5)

Atlanta came into this game against Detroit as the underdog. The Lions defense held the Falcons to 229 total yards, while Detroit racked up 418 yards that would carry them to a 29-17 win and end the season for Atlanta.

I can't say I was disappointed with the overall season, even though our record of 8-8 was no better than last season. But winning the NFC South and making the playoffs for the first time and then advancing to the Divisional playoffs before being knocked out by Detroit was still a huge improvement over last season.

If we can continue to get better, as we have each season, then I do see a Super Bowl title in the very near feature.

Atlanta Falcons Team History
2008 - 3-13 Ranked 31st. 4th In NFC South
2009 - 5-11 Ranked 30th. 3rd In NFC South
2010 - 8-8 Ranked 16th. 3rd In NFC South
2011 - 8-8 Ranked 17th. NFC Divisional Winner.

Highs
CB Von Hutchins - 6 tackles.
S Erik Coleman - 9 tackles.

Lows
A costly turnover that resulted in a TD by Detroit.

2011 Off-Season Moves

Just a note. I screwed up and got confused. I meant to do my resignings before advancing to the draft but got into a click fest and released every damn player that was up for contract renewal. :( In any case, I managed to get a few back that I wanted to keep and signed a couple of great free agent replacements and then filled in the gaps with the draft. So, that's why the Off-Season Moves may look a little confusing and irrational.

Ah well, mistakes happen. Nothing to do, but carry on and make the best of it. :)

This should be an interesting 2012 season, since most of the faces are new. However, our starters are pretty damn good, but if injuries bite us, our bench isn't too deep as it's filled with alot of inexperienced rookie talent.

2012 Atlanta Falcons Starters

2012 Atlanta Falcons Scouting Report
Offensive Line: A-
Running Game: A+
Passing Game: A-
Rush Blocking: B+
Pass Blocking: B
Run Defense: C
Pass Defense: A
Special Teams: B

Depsite my mishap, the 2012 Atlanta Falcons look to be a much better team than last season, at least on paper, showing improvment in pretty much all areas of the scouting report. But our weakness is definitely the bench, with mediocre players at best, combined with young, inexperienced players. As long as our starters can remain healthy, then we should be contending for a win each week.

You signed a guy and immediately traded him? That's cheating. Don't do it again.

I screwed up during the offseason by releasing players I wanted to keep, rather than starting over I had to rebuild my team basically from scratch so signing him was an accident. And since FM would not let me outright release him because it would leave me with less than 53 players, I had no choice but to trade him just to get rid of him. I don't cheat and I'm hoping that comment was made in jest. :)

After almost a 5 month break, I decided to dust off this dynasty and continue my quest for a Super Bowl title. I'll be picking up exactly where I left off (same league file, etc.) at the start of the 2012 season. Week 1 is in the books and the results will follow.

you know what you need to do, trade for better WR(like Crabtree)(if on there), more expeienced QB and start M.Turner at Fullback and J.Norwwod at RB, and trade for 1st-3rd Round draft picks. looks like your going to have the #1 Draft pick.
